We will be in Florence on the weekend of May 1st. I understand that it is Labor Day in Italy. Can I expect restaurants, museums, and other places of tourist interest to be open?

Thanks!

The Uffizi is closed, and most sites say the Accademia is as well. However, this info

< Da martedì a domenica, dalle 8.15 alle 18.50 (chiusura biglietteria ore 18.20)
Pasqua e Pasquetta ore 8.15 - 22.00
1° maggio ore 8.15 -20.00

Giorni di chiusura: Lunedì. Inoltre i giorni: 25 dicembre, 1 gennaio >>

on this site: http://www.sbas.firenze.it/accademia

seems to say it's open?

Looks like Museo dell'Opera di Duomo is open: http://www.operaduomo.firenze.it/opera/frame-orari.htm

To be safe, I'd ask your hotel.

Thanks Sally.

Any input on restaurants and the city in general?

Il Latino, just a few streets away from the Duomo, is one of my favorite restaurants in Florence. Unfortunately, it has become a little more touristy than it once was, but the food and overall experience is delightful. It's a family style restaurant in which they will bring course after course after course all night long. I don't recall ever using a menu in there because both times I was there they basically just brought out whatever they felt like...but it was a very fun experience and the food was great! It's a fun thing to do with a group, or with just a few of you, and it will give you a good taste of the Italian culture.

Have you taken a look at the restaurant reviews, travel notes and trip reports on the Slowtrav site? Lots of great info about about Florence.

Hi Jenny and Maureen.

Thanks for the recommendations. Il Latino sounds like a fun place to enjoy a meal. I've read other positive comments about it. I will search the reviews for more ideas.

I'm actually wondering whether restaurants will be open on Saturday, May 1, Labor Day and also the next day, Sunday because of the holiday. A lot of research I've done indicates many restaurants are usually closed on Sundays.

May 1st and 2nd are our only days in Florence and we would hate to miss the great food in the city.

I was in Florence over their Labor Day weekend, and I don't recall having trouble finding restaurants that were open. I don't want to throw you off though, so I'll check with someone else from my group to see if they can remember for sure. Also, don't miss the Labor Day parade by the Duomo...it's great fun! I'll get back to you about the restaurant thing as soon as I can.

Many people head for country picnics on the May 1 holiday, so it is possible that some Florence restaurants normally open both weekend days will be closed then. I recommend you choose a few restaurants and call or fax them to ask for a reservation and to confirm on the call or by return fax. With two dinners, two lunches maximum during your stay, you should have success.

I'd bet you won't go hungry! There will be places open, even if not top-rated ones necessarily. You might contact your hotel for information...it should be able to give advice and make advance reservations for you if you wish.
