You can use the link on the right to world weather to get an idea. Basically though, it could be very warm or cold and rainy. Last year it was cool, 3 years ago instead it was close to 40°C/104°F

Happy There are lots of web sites that will give you an idea of what the temperature will be...but I wouldn't rely on any of them! It's not their fault, it just seems weather everywhere is less predictable all the time.

May is traditionally a spectacular month. Warm and sparkly in the day, temperate to cool at night. Traditionally.

So...think 70s as a base, with possibilities of 60s and even 50s at night, to 80s in the day, depending on location and the myriad of other weather variables involved. In packing, think layers & coordinates as opposed to "outfits," something to throw on in case it's chillier and rainier than normal; and the opposite if it starts to heat-up. For any other eventuality, you can buy what you need on-site.

Remember, though: however much luggage your taking, it's too much. Wink

thank you for the replies Smile it's what i thought as well, but i was still hoping someone would have a more definitive answer... i suppose i'll pack a few layers, and as you say, i'll just have to buy the rest of the stuff there Wink

We were in Venice and Rome in the exact same timeframe last year-- Venice the first week of May and Rome the second. We then went onto the Amalfi Coast, Florence and Tuscany. I can at least share our experience.

We had one evening of rain in Venice and some drizzle the next day. We had some overcast skies in Rome, but not rain. It was warm enough to wear short sleeved shirts and eat meals outside. Our daughter and I wore capri pants a couple of times. It was warm and pleasant-- not hot. Some days we needed a sweater or light jacket.

I know this is just experience from one year, but my advice would be to plan on pleasant spring weather most of the time. Take layers, as you will need them. Take an umbrella and be prepared to possibly use it. Have a flexible plan for your days based on the weather.

You might enjoy my blog (trip report) about our two weeks in Venice and Rome last May. This was part of a much longer trip to Europe.

May is generally one of the most pleasant month to visit Italy (just like september).

Between 4th and 20 may in the north (Venice) nights are around 46°F/52°F and the day around 66°F/70°F, while in the center-south (Rome) the averages are 51°F/56°F and 71°F/77°F.

As weather, you can expect the typical variability of spring with the mixture of rainy and sunny days, clouds, wind etc

Ciao e buon viaggio !

I love to travel to Italy in May! The weather has always been beautiful, usually in the 70s during the day and a little cooler in the early morning and evenings. I take light clothing because it can get hot in some areas, as well as a light jacket.

I'll be in Italy 10-25th!

Umbrellas and sunglasses are easy to come by on any street corner in Rome. Happy That is an example of Econ 101 at it's best.

We will be in Italy May 9-30 and are looking forward to hopefully seeing lots of flowers.

Got some travel umbrellas and a light raincoat. Think I will need them?
