We are traveling to Venice April 25, 2004, and have realized it is a big holiday (Liberation Day). Does anyone know if any shops or museums will be open?
Hi, Bill. I'm glad you found your way here. You'll find that I didn't steer you wrong. Now, please, someone answer Bill's question as I promised him that someone on this board would know the answer.

In Venice 25 April is also San Marco Day and that takes precedence over Liberation Day. Men bring the women they love red roses-not just boy friend/girl friend love, but children for parents too. It is delightful to see men of all ages carrying roses around Venice in the morning and smiling women carrying them home in the evening. Last year the Gas Company was handing out free roses to all passing women; it was lovely. Some places will be closed but many more will be open. Since Liberation Day is a national holiday, Venice and most other cities are crowded with throngs of Italians on holiday. wo years ago we were in Caserta and we could hardly move the grounds were so mobbed with visitors. I don't think there is a problem with restaurants, but i would definitely make a reservation in advance. Shops espeically in heavy tourist areas such as the Rialto and San Marco will be open, but some stores in more residential areas may close.Churches will be open, and I am pretty sureThe Doge's Palace, The Accademia and Peggy Guggenheim are open. It is also a great day to walk around and visit the different campos or possibly take a vaporetto out to the different islands. There may be some Liberation Day concerts in the evening. I think you are more likely to run into closings on 1 May.

Liberation Day is a public holiday and there may be some closures. Just in case, don't forget the red rose although I am almost sure there will be many street vendors. Why a red rose?. Venice's public holidays include Liberation Day (25 April), Labour Day (1 May), the Feast of the Assumption (15 August), All Saints' Day (1 November) and the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (8 December), Christmas (25 December), St. Stephen's Day (December 26)...

In most cities, there will be some sort of public ceremony marking the occasion and sometimes a parade with marching band, school groups, etc. Two springs ago, we enjoyed the festivities in Busseto (near Parma) and early last year, we passed the town ceremony in Tivoli as we walking to the Villa d'Este, which was open and fairly crowded.
I didn't notice many restaurant closings but banks and offices were closed, I believe.
