Hi just curious about what would be a nice gift for some teenagers in Sicily. My friends will be going to Sicily and I've asked her to send some gifts to an Italian family I'm friends with in Sicily. There mother mentioned her kids are into spending on sneakers clothes etc. Last summer I noticed Puma Sneakers and Adidas were a big hit. I was wondering if they are still a big hit with the young crowd. If so that is what I plan on getting them from the states, a lot cheeper here! Are there any other brand of sneakers that are a hit this Season

I'm sure that American brand-name running shoes would be a big hit with a Sicilian teen. Since you are from New York you should consider anything with NY on it - "I love NY" or NY Yankees T shirts, for example, will be a real status symbol. Marie
Hi there, If you are going with the 'sneaker' idea how about 'Diesel' brand. They are VERY cool and comfortable and though I did see them in Spain and I am sure in Italy last fall they ARE less expensive here. Puma's are on a lot of feet there. Another company to look into to would be Adidas, very popular there. Just a thought. CinCin, W

We have had many threads on this subject in the past. You can find One Such Thread Here which jas links to a bunch of other threads within. Read the whole thread though as the article that was referenced in the first post was pretty much picked apart and destroyed by the time we were done with it.
If your friends ask for yu to get them shoes then make sure you get their correct size but I personally would think of that as not a gift but as a request and then would bring them a personal gift. Something about buying something for someone because it is cheaper in the states just doesn't sound gifty to me. But them I am a weird nut who disagrees with all what to wear and what to bring topics
Christina, I totally agree with you, but since the shoes were the original thought, I thought I would put my two cents in.
I would think that music in the form of CD's or maybe DVD's would be a better idea. How about something that represents the culture of the youth here in America?
The ideas could be countless if you know what 'youths' are into these days. Watching an episode of a weekly show just now, which dealt with a girl about to turn 18, suggested that if you want to know what is 'hot' right now pick up a copy of a teen magazine and go from there.

Food for thought. Personally I wouldn't take shoes or clothes

Music CDs while more expensive are all available here. DVDs, unless the receiver has a DVD player set up to play DVDs from the US would not work. I like the youth culture idea here. If they are boys I would work in some basketball stuff (jerseys, caps) maybe and male fashion accessories (not sunglasses but something that is all the rage now). Girls, the latest fashion accessory rage here too but again not sunglasses. Something like silly bracelets, leather twist bracelets or necklaces, peace things, etc. Mainly think of the aveage teen being a bit of a hippy over here now.
Teenagers love sneakers and T-shirts of all genres! Just consider what kind of sport they practise or they like the most...if they love basketball (and NBA of course... ) think about And1..really much cheaper in the States! Anyhow Puma and Adidas are still a big hit expecially those with a vintage design. As to the brand "Diesel", it is an Italian brand so maybe it is really not an authentic American gift!
Adidas is very popular, with males and females alike, especially Adidas bags for the girls.
Another brand name idea. I saw that Timberland products here in Italy are unbelievably expensive. Three to four times the price of in the States, so that might be another idea.
I might avoid shoes as sizes are different and if they do not fit then the teenager will be disappointed. I would go for t-shirts or accessories. Judie

Consider that Diesel is an Italian brand. They may be cheaper in the Usa, but I would not bet on it. Even in areas where there are no Diesel outlets. CDs... Before you go ahead and buy them, check out the Italian "hit parade"... For instance, here is the Radio 105 chart: RAdio 105 is one of the most populare radio stations amongst the youngsters here. Timberland might be a good idea, since there is this 1980s' revival¹.
¹ I hoped to be out of the Eighties: "non si esce vivi dagli anni Ottanta", like that Afterhours song said.
Our Italian cousins visited last summer as well as my daughter's French sisters and they all loved Nike and Ralph Lauren products, and as said before, anything with NY on it.
I thought, wow these kids like the Yankees? My daughter told me they don't even know who the Yankees are...they just love NY stuff!
And they also bought American CD's because they wanted to bring back what was popular here right now and also because they are apparently less expensive in the U.S., so that would be a really nice gift.
Personally, I think the teenagers are little girls are the easiest to buy for...there is so much stuff for them.
