Question:
We could use some help understanding what our options are for a wedding cake. We will have only 19 of us at the wedding in Certaldo. We are having our reception at the Osteria there. What is a typical Italian wedding cake like? How much should we expect to pay for this (in total and per person?)?

Choices:
hello

Hi Cheryl and Scott -

I'm sure you meant to start a new discussion, not a poll ...

I'm editing your title to make it more descriptive.

It was actually a white cake similar to a pound cake but with the nuts and coconut baked in not on top. maybe it was just a one off that someone created and baked themself?

That is interesting. I have a baker friend her, in Tallahassee, who sells a cake that meets your description and she call it "Italian Cream Cake." It reminds me of what southerners call Hummingbird Cake. Anyway, it's great but I never thought it was really Italian.

Again the wedding soup is a southern Italian thing.. as most recipes that came to AMerica are.

I spoke with my favorite pastry shop.. wedding cakes go for about 3 or 4 Euro a person.
and if you wanted I could teach him how to make the Italian Cream cake.. which noone here has ever seen!
Or you could be blown away by what they make!
If you want to bring the cute bride and groom for the top.. to make it more American... they don't do that..

The "Italian" cream cake here has pecans not walnuts but I'm sure it's very similar to the one on the link. Pecans are more southern...

Are there pecans in Italy?

Since just a few years, but they are not yet common. I love them anyhow.

Our wedding party has only 18 people, so it should cost around 72EU. We are having our reception dinner at the Osteria in Certaldo. Do you think they make this sort of typical wedding cake? If not, can you make a recommendation for me as to where to order this. Also, we arrive to Tuscany on Monday and our wedding is on Friday. Can we wait to order it until we get there, or should we plan ahead?

As I mentioned... it is not a typical wedding cake here.. but I can help them make it..or maybe Rebekah has someone!again.. if you want pecans you will have to bring them!

In the long run.. the cake is sold by weight... so the cost I gave you was an estimate..

I had spoken with the local pastry shop.. don't know what the restaurant would charge..
plus what does your menu include?

If Diva's favourite pastry shop in Certaldo is anywhere near as good as her recommended Bagnoli's in Tavernelle ... go for it!!

Diva, Our wedding coordinator told us that the Osteria in Certaldo would provide the cake for 184 EU. We are only going to be 16 people, so that would be 11.5EU per person. This seems outrageously expensive to me. Is it? If you could recommend your favorite pastry shop in Certaldo, that would be great. Any idea how much the they would charge us?

you know that with a wedding planner.. they add on to prices on everything..I would find out first if you can plan your own cake.. DJ etc.. or are you fully contracted to her???

In a previous post here I had already posted the cost of a regular cake .. about 4 euro per person..

Diva,
Yes, I figured as much. Based on your estimate of 3-4 EU I was shocked to get her estimate that was 11.5EU/person. I will find out if we can bring our own cake and arrange our own DJ. If so, can you help me order the cake and arrange for it to be delivered to the Osteria. We plan to visit the Osteria the Tues before the wedding, so we could stop in and pay for the cake.
