Sunday's San Francisco Chronicle newspaper included an article (from the LA Times) about an $18 million preservation project beginning soon at Herculaneum. The Packard Humanities Institute provided a grant to help this project.
quote:
The recently announced conservation plan was made possible by the application of an Italian law that allows private organizations to work at sites controlled by the state, and by the Packard grant. According to the superintendent of Pompeii and Herculaneum, the project will make it possible to open workshops, begin restoration and "offer visitors a fuller and more detailed view of the old city."

Colleen, I'm sending your quote off to my daughter, the archaeologist. Sounds like a great "dig" for next summer!
