We will be arriving in Rome Sunday May 1 which seems to be a major holiday in Italy. Does anyone know if the train/bus schedules are altered on Sundays and holidays? Keeping that in mind, is it easy to take the train into town, or is it less hassle (although more expensive) to take a transport service into the city. Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, schedules are altered. Many years ago, when I lived in Rome, city buses didn't run at all on May 1, but now they do run on a holiday schedule. The trains from the airport run: one line to Termini and another to the other stations each every 30 minutes as normal on Sundays. On other days the latter line runs every 15 minutes.
Rosie, I hope you've found the wealth of information over on the main site. We have a page on Rome Transportation (Start in the "Instructions" menu, then scroll down. In the Trip Planning section is a page on Car Services. You can also easily search the Message Board (use the "find" button) for "FCO Car Service" of "FCO Taxi" to find past threads with recommendations. Whether to take the train or a taxi/car service I think is going to depend on the amount of luggage you have, how easy a transfer you want, and of course your budget.
I have been trying to get information on whether restaurants are open on May as well. Should we try to make advance reservations before leaving for Rome? Are most restaurants open?
For restaurants really no problems and also underground is open ! There will be a big concert at St John in the evening ( San Giovanni ) to celebrate the worker's day ! Enjoy your staying ! Saluti da Roma Angelo
