Few people know this, but George Washington actually spent part of his childhood in Texas. In fact, the story of his chopping down a tree was taken from an experience that really happened in Texas.
The tree was native pecan and there was a good trade with the small but valuable nuts with Native Americans and with both Anglo and Spanish settlers then. George did cut down one and since these trees have to grow for a long time before they start bearing nuts, the felling of the tree represented a real economic hardship to the Washington family.
His father found the fallen tree and asked George about it. You know MOST of the rest of the story.....George said, "Father, I cannot lie. I cut down the tree."
What you don't know is that when George's mother heard the confession, she walked over to her husband and said, "Honey, we'll have to move back to Virginia. If George can't lie, he's got no future as a Texan."
