Yes google has finally answered that age old question of how to get from here to there.

To see for yourself

Go to Google Maps. Click Get Directions. Enter Here for your starting directions and There for your destination to see how to get there.

I was amazed to see it is actually just a short 683KM journey and it can be driven in less than 8 hours. Wink

Here's the map if you can't find it with my directions above.

Wonderful!

I tried it on my GPS but it seems to be less sophisticated than Google Big Grin...

My French coworker said that you can probably also get a great meal along the way from here to there. Happy

So now who is actually going to make the trip from Here to There??? I'm sure there's lots to see on the way. That would be a funny travelogue.

I can't do it this year, but I'm seriously considering this trip! [I'm cross-linking this thread to the France forum]

My advice: skip Montluçon (about midway between Héré and Théré) but make a little side trip to Vichy along the way.

Our dog Callie was born near Montmarault, which is on this route.

Oh, and don't miss Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule, a nice little wine village near Vichy.

As I looked at the map, I was thinking that it wouldn't really matter where you went on the way from Here to There, so you could customize the route to seek out all the best places along the route.

Maybe this is what I should be doing next month. I would drive through some beautiful country that is off the traditional tourist's path.

Héré is a real place, but I'm pretty sure Théré is a hoax - possibly put in by somebody once they'd spotted Héré.

Ooh yes, St-Pourçain. I remember going there on our honeymoon in the Auvergne (eek: 27 years ago!). Nice Rosé!

Right about Théré. Doesn't exist in the Michelin road atlas. The closest name is Théret (château de), which is near Guéret in the Limousin.

Bummer that there is no Théré. It still looks like an interesting trip.

Hey,when I visited Annecy several years ago, I drove around the Lake on an incredibly hot day with many, many people lining the water...it was extremely crowded, and I did drive through Héré on the western side! You never know.

If you go down to the largest size blowup on google, you will see that the road at least is named Théré...

Amazing!

But don't believe them unless you drive a Porsche. I got 11 hours from Paris to Barcelona but it took us the best part of a week (in a 70s camper van with an 8-year-old, admittedly).
