We are in the process of making a take off of it , with a "Where in heaven is Mozart" one. We are taking videos of her playing her violin around the world as we go at key spots.
He did such a terrific job the first time on his own, someone paid him to do another one! It is harder than it looks!
EST 9:03...They just showed a split second clip of Matt's "Dance" on "CBS's Sunday Morning" as part of a teaser for an upcoming story this morning about "Internet Video Stars."
Update, 9:55 a.m....Yup, they even had a short interview with him....and he is in the process of making another sponsored trip (by a gum company) for his third video where he will be asking other people to join him in his "dance."
Atleast, through his lectures on "YouTube" I was able to find out how he was able to get out on that giant boulder bridge in Norway. Wow! Cindy

Hi,RFujitani. In the above post where Pauline posted for "You Tube," there are 3 college lectures on video where Matt outlines the making of his international "Dance."

Ahhh I see. I was just thinking, "Ok, he travels to places and films himself dancing. What more is there to tell?" But okay, he talks about how the videos are made. That could be interesting. I'll have to give those a look.
I stayed away from this forum for a week as I knew it would be an exercise in frustration. But I have been a fan of Matt's for quite sometime so had to check in. I am on dialup. I am not trying to complain, but to suggest that those of you who can actually look at a video the first time to be thankful, be happy, appreciate it! I'd do Matt's dance if it would happen for me. My method for watching videos is to turn off the speakers, click play and then wait about 5 times longer than the video is and check back. THEN I can 'watch again' without interruption! Oh, it's ready now....

First, don't you diss my Matt!!
Second, it sounds like a simple idea, and it is - but to excute this was complex. I think he spent a few years doing this. He had to be consistent about doing the dance in interesting places. He was doing it just for fun - probably had no idea it would become popular, so need to push himself to do this (my guess). A simple idea, but I think it is brilliant. I have watched that video countless times and I love the joy and passion that it expresses.
I am a Matt Fan!!!
I work hard when traveling to take photos for the website - boring photos of parking spaces, parking signs, store shopping carts. It sounds easy, but is a lot of work just to remember to do the photos, take time out of your vacation to do this, try to get them without getting thrown out of the shop. One time, when Steve and I were walking half a mile on a narrow shoulder on a busy highway in England to get to the perfect spot to photograph the roundabout, Steve said "This is what sets SlowTrav apart from other travel sites. We risk death." Then, when I get home, I have to figure them all out and document everything - time consuming. I am still doing this for past trips - writing up the pages for photos I took on a trip.
And this is nothing compared to what he did with the video! (Okay, my lecture is over.)
Ok, well here's an idea. I will get the youtube of Matt unblocked at school so I can use it as an "inspirational video" for the kids. It can be tied in with their (slow) travel blogs, they can do a retell of the concept and then actually use the idea to springboard their own similar idea.
What fun! It should generate some interesting writing!
Pauline: Oh, I agree completely. It IS a difficult and complex thing to do, and taking trip photos can sometimes be a chore. I understand all of that.
I think what threw me off is when the word "lecture" was used; I tend to think of the word "lecture" in terms of someone being scolded or (as I believed it was in this sense) someone giving an academic presentation. So naturally I thought, "What could he possibly be lecturing others about?" For some reason, it didn't occur to me at all that he would just be giving talks about the production of the video.
And for the record, I thought the video was a brilliant idea.
He could also lecture about thinking up an original idea and following it thru - an inspirational lecture. Or about the travel he has done and what he learned.
Great idea Leslie! There are some videos on YouTube with people doing their own versions of Matt's video - some are pretty funny. That Cambridge Pub one I posted (NOT suitable for kids) was sort of one.
Having watched a lot of youtubes lately - it's one of my new hobbies and I'm teaching media studies involving making video slips at the moment, I still think this is the best youtube out.
Excellent filming and a terrific concept. Can't be beat. I'm watching his lectures right now. What an interesting speaker!
Whew! Ok, good. I was trembling for a bit there...

The song is called "Sweet Lullaby" by a group called "Deep Forest." There are several remixes of the song, and I'm not sure which version is the one playing in the video, although it does sound more organic (I think Deep Forest is more along the lines of electronic music), so it may be one of the live versions.
I spent the afternoon working with the concept. I had the principal come to see what we were up to, and it looked pretty good with the kids all doing Matt's dance while his video clip played. Then we watched the first lecture where he shows part of the making of it, including the Norway bit with the rock, 1000 meters up in the air.
Their work books are looking great. Maps, journal entries, hand drawn illustrations of the students wherever they have been around the world, digital camera photos added...
Everybody's humming the song and several other teachers came in to look.
OK, we did modify our work to "Where the heck is..." because of the age group.
Oh, and tomorrow one of the students I am training up as a school computer tech, will continue the class filming using the digital camera I got through the school last year, in groups of four, for little "Where in heck is..." presentations. I'm putting the music onto the ipod right now and will take in my little speakers for the film makers to use.
We did start a youtube site, but I made the decision to just store the short video clips on the computer and watch them through media player. While the site can be a great resourse if used carefully, I do have young children so have to modify my program where necessary.
