Hi Guys

First off, as I'm new here, I'd like to say "Hi" to everyone.

Now, I have a rather unique request to ask of any French natives (or speakers) to help solve a mystery that has puzzled me since 1988!
Basically the story goes that when I was 8 years old (during the afore-mentioned year) I just happened to be scanning through Long Wave on my old stereo when I tuned into a French radio station. At that very time I was recording what I was listening to onto cassette (for no real reason) and I ended up recording what sounded like an Oriental-themed song sung in French; I can only imagine it may be a number from a musical, but for twenty years I have been wanting to know at least the title!

So, thanks to digital-to-analogue conversion, I found the old cassette, recorded it into my mac and have it here - just as it was recorded back in 88.

If you listen near the end I'm sure the DJ mentions the title, or gives some other info.

ANY information would be so gratefully received - even if it's just a title or what the song is roughly about!

The link to listen online is below.

Many thanks!

While I can't help out, I love the story! And how technology has allowed you to go back in time, as it were.

You're right, the DJ says the band name, and "with the China Dolls"...but that is all I could pick up. Someone else will surely catch this thread and chime in with the real answer.

Ma Poupée de Chine. Voilà les mots et un extrait d'une version chantée par Chantal Goya; cliquez ici (or, as we would say: click here)!

The title of the song, sung in the extract linked above, is "My China doll". In this version it is sung by Chantal Goya, and I suspect she also wrote the song. It is the story of a little Parisian girl, of her cherished China doll and of the faraway, misterious country from which the doll has come.

Enjoy, and welcome to Slow Travel! We hope to continue to meet you here.

Merci beaucoup, Doru!

You can't imagine what a welcome relief it is to finally have that mystery from my childhood explained!

I really like the tune and I'll never forget it - probably because it's sat niggling away in my mind for twenty years!

Thanks again!
