A question arising from our stay this week on the Cour Bel-Air in the 11th arrondissement of Paris: The Dictionnaire Historique des Rues de Paris by Jacques Hillairet says the courtyard gets its name from a "hôtel meublé" that stood on the site. This seemed curious. What sort of residence would NOT be furnished? And so I scurried to the Petit Robert, which doesn't answer the question but hints at an answer. Is "hôtel meublé" a synonym for "maison meublée," or "hôtel particulier"? Or is it the opposite?

it is an old French practice. without furniture you pay less tax than furnished. of course; you can always put the furniture after.....!this is an old passage of french real estate jargon

the practice is still on .
