For anyone who might be puzzled, "beau-frère" and "belle-soeur" mean brother-in-law and sister-in-law.

The French word-a-day newsletter that I like so much had a nice piece last week based on the word "beau-fils" (son-in-law) and the vocabulary associated with in-laws and step families.

As a stepmother myself, I like these terms. But I've also been told that the sweet words can take on a different tone with a roll of the eyes or a snicker...

Count on the French to have a specific word meaning a nasty stepmother: marâtre . Both sound and meaning are sooooo yucko that they make the listener feel like a cat stroked the wrong way: MARÂTRRRRRRE !
