I am lower than low-tech and have a question I hope someone can answer.

We would like to buy a portable DVD player here and take it to Italy.
There is an Audiovox 10" from Costco that says: E-port/Game Port
Compatible Formats: DVD/CD/MP3.
Lots of other info, but nothing about zones.

Will Italian made movies play on this player?
If not, is there a brand here that will work with Italian films?

DVD's themselves are coded to work in different areas of the world. A player bought here probably won't work with DVD's produced for Europe.

This is a anti-piracy measure adopted by the DVD producers. My wife's Apple Macbook has the ability to make a limited number of changes between the different codes...... The fifth choice of DVD "region of the world" is locked as the "now and forever choice".

That's the limit of my knowledge. Perhaps someone with in-depth knowledge and experience will weigh in on this post.

Bill

Here's a map of the regions
Region 1 - The U.S., U.S. territories and Canada
Region 2 - Europe, Japan, the Middle East, Egypt, South Africa, Greenland
Region 3 - Taiwan, Korea, the Philippines, Indonesia, Hong Kong
Region 4 - Mexico, South America, Central America, Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Caribbean
Region 5 - Russia, Eastern Europe, India, most of Africa, North Korea, Mongolia
Region 6 - China

Debra, how long are you going for? I went last October for five weeks and took one with me. I took a stack of DVDs to watch. I didn't buy any over there.

There are two past threads that I participated in last year here and here.

I have put it away very safely to take again next year as I had a ball with it. I watched it during siesta in the afternoon and in the evenings for a bit.

Actually we want it for a gift for the daughter of someone we met in Rome and have become friends with.

We always rack our brain thinking of things to bring to this couple and their 10 year old daughter, and it's hard as they have a VERY small apartment, beautifully decorated.

But they also always have us over for a fabulous seafood meal that never seems to end.

I was thinking this would be a great gift and sort of cover everyone.

Apparently it is illegal to sell the PAL/NTSC here in the US. We just found this out at Best Buy.
(and now that I know some of the "lingo" I feel so much smarter than I did a few hours ago Wink)

However, these units are apparently available "on line", which makes no sense.

The unit we are looking at at Costco.com is only available on line, so maybe this WILL work, although it doesn't say it is PAL/NTSC.

Oh I see! I thought you wanted it for yourself.

We did that years ago - we bought a VCR for the Aunts on our three month trip as a thank you gift. We bought it over there, in Modena.

Could you buy one over there?

I certainly could, I guess. Are they generally quite a bit more expensive? Oh, wait a minute, you are in Australia.

Over here they run around $200 for a 10 inch at Costco.

Happy

I got my portable DVD player, which has a very small screen - see the pic on the earlier thread I put a link to, at a Coles supermarket in September last year for A$140. It was an impulse buy and I used my discount card so got 5% off it.

Do you definitely want to get them a portable one and not a regular one? Regular ones that you plug into your TV here are now down to A$38 at the Aldi supermarket and the Good Guys electronic store.

We all use our computers here too to play DVDs.

First of all, I was thinking of the 10 year old and what fun it would be for her, so I still think a portable one would be my first choice.

Thanks for all your help as I pursue this.
We are going to be back in Rome in September and that seems far away when you are GOING to Rome, but short when preparing to go.
