Sorry if this has been covered before--I'm new to the forum and have not found an answer by searching...

How do you mount a GPS unit in a rental car? Do they need to be mounted? We will be using 3 different rental cars over the course of the trip.

We are planning a driving trip through Europe this summer and will purchase a GPS unit for the trip. Can anyone recommend one? I'm leaning toward a Garmen with US/European maps.

Any additional advice on GPS units is appreciated as I have never owned one and am not familiar with them.

Grazie!

Look at Garmin's bean bag mount. You stick it in your big pocket or bag and nobody will know you've used it.

Hi

My Garmin comes with a mounting device for the car. It is a suction cup that you attach to the front window and you click the Garmin in place. When you get out of the car you can just bring your Garmin device along. We had a GPS with us to Italy when we went there last year and I don't think I will ever go on a road trip again without a GPS :-)

We bought the Garmin Nuvi 670 for our trip to Italy last year and loved it. Because I live in CA, I cannot mount the GPS on the window. I thought about bringing the bean bag mount (which works great), but didn't want to "waste the weight" in my luggage. My wife was comfortable just hanging on to the GPS while it was on. I 'spose that's easier than watching a map. Hope this helps.

Please excuse my ignorance but where is the best place to purchase a GPS such as the Garmin? I think this would be a great gift for my husband who is traveling for business frequently. Barb Cabot

I bought ours from GPSnow and a couple accessories also. I've been very pleased with them.

Thanks for all your helpful advice. We will probably purchase ours at Fry's if in stock otherwise we'll order online from Amazon.

By the way, I noticed people are selling their used gps units on eBay for near the retail price. It hardly makes sense to rent a unit when you can buy and resell at little cost. However, I'm sure once we have one in our posession, my husband won't be able to part with it, so I'm guessing the unit will be ours to keep.
