Since it is unlocked it would seem to me that I could get a local SIM card in Italy to use instead of the one it comes with. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
We were in France last month. I rented a cell through Verizon, here. Actually it comes from Vodafone and has a U.K. #. I guess it depends on how much you plan on using it. We used it quite a bit (there were 9 of us travelling together)during a one week trip. My total cost was $116 for the week. Check with your home carrier to see if they have a program for you. Also depends on how long you'll be using it. Good luck.

If you have ATT (Cingular) or T-Mobile service now and have a quad band phone, you can get the subsidy unlock code for you own phone and use an Italian SIM card in it. It took Cingular a little to send me my unlock code but they did without any hassle when I told them I wanted to use it with an Italian SIM card.
In fact I still used the phone I bought on EBAY but I tried the Vodafone Italy SIM card in my Cingualr RAZR phone and it worked fine.
We have Verizon now. But we are going to be in Italy 5 weeks so it seems to me to be more cost effective to buy a phone and get an Italian SIM card. I'll be watching the phones on ebay. Thanks for the tip.
