Last month I had my computer worked on, and I've just realized that something is missing!
Previously when I clicked on to "My Pictures", then on to a folder within that folder, I would see the other folders or pictures on the right hand side, and on the left hand side was a separate box with such choices as 'Move this folder" and other options I don't remember.
I DO remember that one of the options was "View This as a slideshow", and I could view the pictures within a folder automatically, without having to click the 'next' arrow.
I've searched and searched, but can't find any way to restore this feature. Does anyone know if it's possible?
Are you seeing the little submenus on the left at all? Or when you open the folder, does it only display the various files in that folder?
I ask because the submenus can be collapsed so that the choices don't show up. The one that has the "View as Slideshow" option is called Picture Tasks, and there should be a small down arrow in the bar with that label. If you click that bar, it should open up to show all the various choices available under "Picture Tasks," including the slideshow option.
However, if those submenus aren't even showing up on the left, that's a different problem.
You only see this option if the properties of the folder has been defined as a Photo album or Pictures. I'm not certain how exactly this gets assigned by default but I know that I typically have to set this when I create a new folder in Explorer and manually copy photos into it.
I might be able to tell you how to fix it. I'm not certain if this will work with the My Pictures which is under My Documents, but we can try.
Right click on the top folder. From the pop-up menu, select Properties. Properties is usually at the bottom of the pop-up menu when you right click. Click on the 'Customize' Tab. At the top is a section that says "What Kind of Photo do you want?" and a field that says "Use this folder type as a template". Click the down arrow and select either Pictures or Photo Album. Underneath is a check box that says "Apply this template to all sub folders". Check this box. Now click Apply at the bottom and exit.
Note, when I looked at the Properties of "My Pictures" under "My Documents", I didn't have a Customize tab. If you don't then, I'll have to research more. Of course, you could go and change the properties on each sub-folder but that might be a pain.

NO...I don't have any sort of menu on the left! I wonder where it went...and how it got lost!
Last night, while looking at the pictures, Art DID find another way to view the pics as a slideshow. Let's see if I can explain it: When you open a folder with pictures in it, then double click on one of the photos, it opens a full scree version of that photo with various options at the bottom of the screen....arrows to go to the next (or previous) photo, options to delete, or print, or zoom in & out, etc. As it turns out, one of the options IS to view as a slideshow.
Okay, I got really brave a decided to see if I could do what Marta suggested. When I got to the "Customize" tab, it was set to "Albums", and since I knew that wasn't doing what I wanted, I set it to "Pictures".
My computer then told me that in order to do this I had to enable some sort of option for folders (don't remember what exactly it was now), and I said Yes. After a few seconds it was ready, I clicked "Apply", and the menu box was back on the left!
Thanks to both of you for taking the time to help, and a special thanks to Marta for the detailed instructions!
