I was thinking of getting a new Sony VAIO notebook, but am going to wait for awhile because of the announcement of the new Intel chip for notebooks. They say some computers will have the new chip in the next few weeks, but it may take longer for it to go in all models.
" The new version of Intel's Centrino technology, says the company, promises to give notebooks longer battery life, faster performance and improved wireless capabilities, as well as enhanced entertainment experience -- from watching high-definition movies to playing video games -- putting notebooks more on par with their brawnier desktop counterparts. "
I also have a friend who's running Vista on one of his machines at home, but the most I got to see of Vista's capabilities was it's media library (my friend uses that particular computer purely to run movies off of it into his home theater system). It actually looked pretty nifty!
My husband and I are in the market for a new notebook and are concerned about whether we want Vista or not. When you buy these new laptops it seems they are already loaded with Vista. Do we want Vista? I have heard that there are problems with sharing files, needs drivers, etc. What do you guys think?

I used the beta version of Vista for a while, and decided not to bother upgrading my XP system.
This is not to say I didn't like Visa, I just felt that the improvements over XP were not worth the investment in new hardware (Vista is a hog compared to XP) as well as the cost of the operating system that I didn't see as a huge improvement.
Having said this, if I were to buy a new laptop, I would want it to have Vista providing the specs of the laptop enabled it to run Vista to its full capacity.

From what I read, most of problems with Vista are the devices you connect the computer too. I will have to find out are working drivers for my printers? For my Cable Modem? For my new PDA phone? My printer router?
There was a discussion a month ago about Photoshop CS3 not working correctly on Vista. Photoshop is the most important tool I use and do not need headaches that are caused by me. Also there was a discussion on color management in Vista, very important to photographers, were it can is certain cases screw up the color.
I will wait until the end of the year when it more mature OS then looked to migrate to Vista.
I just bought a new notebook two months ago. Everything had Vista but then I found a Lenovo with XP. When I called to place my order (it was through the IBM employee purchase option), I made a comment about how lucky I felt finding a notebook with XP still. The sales rep agreed, he felt as I did that he wanted to give Vista at least another six to eight months to work out the kinks.
Pauline, do all of Steve's peripherals work with his new machine?
Pauline, thanks for bringing this to our attention. I really want the Sony VAIO, but haven't decided yet. Will check to see when the new chip is installed here.
