We've ordered and are expecting delivery next week of our new computer (80G, super-speed, no major video/sound bells and whistles but far more than what we have and will very much do the job plus some). Dell is including the software necessary to transfer our files, which brings my question:
We will obviously need the cord to connect the two computers yes? Anything specific (I was wondering if I could use my digital camera cable?)? What's the easiest way to go about this? We don't have a large amount that needs to be transferred, just some docs, a few excel files. What about bookmarks? Are they easily transferrable?
Stupid stupid question -- with an FTP program (which I love, as I used it to access our website on our host's server and was copying and transferring files, and it was fun!), could I just access the computer and then copy files? I have quite a lot of photos on this old computer that I'd like to copy over easily, without having to have the sender resend them.
Old computer does not have writeable CD, so I can't just copy onto CDs.
I was on the Dell website today and I saw a transfer cable available from Dell. It is made by Belkin (Manufacturer Part# : F5U258 Dell Part# : A0746349) and so it is probably available many places.
You can also use a usb flash drive or if you have one, a usb memory reader and your camera's memory card. I have a 4 MB compact flash and it will hold lots of documents. We used it to move files to my wife's new laptop.
You probably can not use FTP unless you are able to setup a home network and make a network connection between the two PCs. If you are, then you need to setup your new PC as an FTP server. If you are able to create a home network, it would probably be easier to just share a folder on your new PC and then connect to the new PC. You would use windows to copy the files.
I suspect it will be easiest to use the software and cable from Dell.
Regarding your bookmarks, You can export them from your browser to a file, copy the file to the new PC and then import.

At this point I'm thinking it'll be a lot easier to just email the docs to myself I mean, really, we have broadband and we'll still have broadband, so why not!
When I recently upgraded, I did e-mail to myself the files I wanted to transfer; my old computer was so old that it was the only practical way I could come up with. Worked fine. Yrs, Robert
