I was just informed by the place where I purchased Adobe reader and photo shop that they are not stored in a file on that program. So I have lost all my photos of Italy and France.
I want to cry. (Actually I want to kill those stupid, incompetent, computer techs.)
Oh no! I'm really sorry to hear this Ginger. I'm no expert on computers, but I also think that maybe you should get a second opinion from another source. Maybe someone who specializes in recovering possible lost data. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Ginger, I am so sorry to hear that you lost all of your photos. I agree with Terry and Trekcapri. Try to get a second opinion from a smart geek, not one of the stupid incompetent techs. I know how upset I would be and really feel for you.
I know it is too late now but for the future anyway, always do a backup copy. If possible store on another media i.e. portable hard drive (they are very cheap) or every week or two burn a backup onto DVD/CD. (My wife was in Thailand a few years back and she took loads of pictures in Thailand and only realised at the end of the trip that there was no film in the camera!)
I'm not sure how the process works. Is it a Mac or a Windows based system? Do you normally download the photos onto the computer, or let the software do it for you. Did you need to have your harddisk replaced/reformatted?
If it is just a case of having deleted the photos from an existing computer, then there is a good chance that you might be able to recover them.

Ginger, I don't know if this will help you at all, but the New York Times just published an article on photo recovery. At least you know you're not alone, if a whole industry has grown up around this problem!
It's Windows. I have an entirely new hard drive, but the article makes it sound like they recover the photos from the card itself, not the hard drive. Is that the way you read it Roz?
Yes, it does sound like the places in that article are dealing with the camera cards, not a hard drive. I guess if you had a lot of pictures from the past, that wouldn't help you.
We lost all our photos of the Brevard GTG (from the computer, not camera), and used this. FIRST they see if they can recover the data, and if they CAN, then you pay $40. If it is unrecoverable, you pay nothing! photo recovery
I was in tears until Brad found this! I SO hope it works for you!

Do you have the old hard drive? If so, is there something wrong with it? Even if it is broken, files might be able to be recovered.

If you DO still have your old hard drive, you might want to contact the service that I just used to recover the data (and programs) on my crashed hard drive.
so you had the photos stored on one hard drive and bought another and thought the tech would do the transfer of folder from one to another and that did not happen--is that the gist of the situation-- and had no other memory cards with photos on them?
One final attempt to help. Do you have several camera cards? It may be possible to recover some of the original pictures.
If for exanple a card holds 1000 pictures, and you have deleted them all, and retaken a further 500, it may be possible to recover some of the originals. There is free software that can do this, and I could send it to you (It is an old version - the latest are all "pay for", but the older version is still very good.)

What happened was that the Naples tech did not save the first disc he backed up for me nor did he give it to me. He did tell that the HD was going so I asked them to replace it at the repair center.
They didn't and it crashed, plus the CD/DVD driver was so bad that the Naples tech said he couldn't do another back up. Which I just found out was not true he could of used a flash drive.
Then to compound the problem the repair tech did replace my hard drive but did not give that to me. If he had I probably could of used the guy Roz did to get the photo's restored.
I only have one camera card. I have used it several times since our Venice and Loire trips though, however, I am willing to try just about anything at this point.
