Hi all! I actually discovered this board about a year ago and have been lurking ever since as my husband and I plan our travels. Now that we are just a few months from our departure and getting down to the nuts and bolts of planning I thought it was time to start participating! We are going to be traveling for...well, for a looong time, since we will both be working as we go--we just need our laptops and an internet connection (and not necessarily one that is either constant or fast). And since we're working, we'll be spending lots of time--weeks or months--in each place, so it will be very slow travel. We'll be starting out in western Europe and seeing where our mood (and Schengen restrictions!) takes us...
We've both lived, worked, and traveled abroad in Europe and Asia, so we are not complete newbies to slow travel, but I've still found this website invaluable for information, and encouraging as well. (Other people are doing this seemingly crazy thing that we're planning!) I was keeping up with houseblend's blog for as long as it lasted, since they were doing something similar to us, and I'm addicted to Kaydee's descriptions and pictures of France and other places.
Anyway, right now it looks like we'll be leaving in January. We're still hammering out some final itinerary details for the first few months and as that becomes definite I'm sure I'll be in some of the other forums bugging y'all for advice!
Thanks to both of you for your kind welcomes. Doru: I hope I'm able to be half as helpful as some of the information in threads here has been to me! Much of my travel experience is pre-2000 (so needless to say I have really itchy feet at this point!!) which means I'm a bit out of date on some specifics, but hopefully I can contribute on more general stuff and the handful of places I've been more recently. And Chris, yes, I do feel really lucky! It's definitely something we've been working toward over a long time but I still feel like pinching myself sometimes.
