Hi my name is Leonora and I just found out about Slow Travel. I am so excited to be part of this board. I love travelling "slow" and talk about Italy. I am from Milan and moved to California 9 years ago. I am a proud mom of a 18-month boy and will be happy to contribute with my experiences and insider tips.
Welcome to Slow Travel, Leonora! We are looking forward to your participation on our forums, bringing a very special view of things from both sides of the ocean!
Leonora. Welcome. I first went to Santa Monica in 1980 and back again in 1982 and 1989. It was a great town. Not very built up and even a little run down in places but the town had plenty of character. I went back there a few years ago and everything had changed to brash and modern, but no character.
Still, I envy you your weather. Summer has been absolutely awful here in NW France. My one consolation is I live in open countryside. Even as I write this, there is a bird feed table several feet in front of me (the other side of the window) with birds back and forth all the time. They're a hungry lot.

Hi yeap, Santa Monica has changed but still one of the most beautiful cities in California. I love living here. The weather is great, the beach is close, there is everything you need (I barely go shopping in L.A.) and most of all a sense of community. It is like a village. I love the countryside of France. I used to travel a lot to France when I lived in Milan: Paris, Nice, Cannes, and La Rochelle where I spent a summer studying French. It was 1985...I loved that summer.
Welcome, Leonora. There are several members of slowtrav who live in or near Santa Monica.
We make our way down there, from Ventura County, about once a month and love the weather, restaurants, shops, on or near the promenade, and the beautiful beaches.
I hope you enjoy Santa Monica and I'm sure we will enjoy your Italian expertise. And 18 months old is just the perfect age to really start having fun with your little boy! I'll bet he loves the beach.
I'm a new member myself and also love the idea of slow travel and talking about Italy. I want to send you a special welcome because I work in Santa Monica and live in West Los Angeles, so I feel like we're neighbors. Last year was my first time to Italy and as expected, I fell in love with it and am now a few months into taking an Italian language course. I will be in Milano for a day or two in January/February 2008 (my longer trip will be Lucca), so I want to send you another special welcome for being from Milan!

Hi Debra sorry it took me a week to reply to your message. I am happy you love my "foster" town. This is my home now even though Italy is always in my heart. We come to your area sometimes. I love Ojai particularly. Let me know when you come to visit.
Hi Kathy I briefly looked at your blog. Absolutely lovely! Let me know when you are in Santa Monica. We can have an espresso if you like. My favorite place is 18th Street Cafe on Broadway @ 18th
