I just discovered Slow Travel online yesterday and think this is a wonderful site! My French wife, Martine, and I left southern California a few years ago to make a new home in southwestern France. We live in a region known as the Haut-Quercy, specifically in the northern tip of the French department called the LOT. If you’ve never heard of our area you are not alone … it has to be one of France’s best kept secrets! Just two hours from either Bordeaux or Toulouse and only about a four hour train ride south of Paris brings you to an area known only by the most ardent Francophiles.
Yet, mankind has inhabited this region for over 450,000 years. The area was home to both Cro-Magnon & Neanderthal man and the finest prehistoric cave paintings ever created are located here. This is where Julius Caesar defeated the Gaul’s in 53 BC! And the region’s pristine medieval villages magically transport you back to the time of the Knights Templar and the Crusades. Needless to say, every day here for both Martine & I is one of new discovery. I look forward to getting involved with the Slow Travel community and sharing with it what we learn about our new home. Warm regards, Jack

Cool logo. Welcome to ST, Jack. We also transplanted, after years on other places like So.Cal., to northwestern Italy. I for one am interested in learning about your area. Also the name you have chosen for your activities makes me hungry. It's my favorite food, I think. We get them here too in Piedmont (there is a town called Cherasco in Piedmont where Napoleon had his HQ and there is still a snail festival there every year).
