Hi, I recently joined SlowTravel. I found out about this site from my National Geographic Travel Mag. I love to travel and photograph! I am particularly found of out of the way places, away from the cities. I am working on planning a trip to Iceland and the Faroe Islands. I have begun collecting info. I saw several people post about the expense of Iceland - and read a blog by "elizabeth_s" which was informative. Does anyone have a suggestion for when the best time to go is? I found that when I've traveled around Denmark/Sweden/Finland/Norway I've greatly prefered the non-tourist seasons - even the winter (dec/jan), but I'm not sure if that is a good time to visit Iceland. Also - has anyone visited the Faroe Islands?

I look forward to hearing from any of you in the community.

Hello Des. Smile

I like to travel and photograph too. I'm interested in hearing more about your Iceland and Faroe Islands trip. Sounds like a great photography experience. Lucky you!

Welcome Des!!

You will probably get a better response if you post in the "The Rest of Europe" forum, but I will say that I hear Iceland can be extremely windy and therefore often feel colder than it is. Apparently, it is only sunny when it is windy, which means that it either sunny and windy, or overcast and cloudy - so never all that warm... When I was in high school in Norway, we had Icelandic students come visit during the summer and they said the Norwegian summer was balmy! Then again, you can always warm up in the hot springs/lagunes...

One of my Japanese students went to Iceland over the Thanksgiving break to see the aurora borealis. She was totally disappointed because they were having either blizzards or rain storms for the 4 days she was there.

No aurora in sight.

Also, she said a coke and hamburger was $20.00. Ouch!

Hello, Ágústa, and welcome to Slow Travel!

We have opened a separate topic for Des here but have not seen any follow up since that initial post.

But it is good to know that we have a new member in Iceland, ready to answer questions!

Hello Ágústa,

Rob and I live in California along the Pacific coast aprox. 125 miles south of San Francisco.

The cities that are more well known around us are Carmel - where once upon a time the actor Clint Eastwood was the mayor. Monterey - where the author John Steinbeck lived and wrote many books such as Cannery Row, East of Eden, Red Pony, Tortilla Flats and more. Monterey was also the first Capital for California. There is also Pebble Beach where golf is king, but also there is a world reknown Concours d'Elegance.

It is a slice of heaven, just as I suspect Iceland to be. True beauty as only Mother Nature and a few other heavenly souls wished for and gave us.

Again, welcome to you and Des.

Wendy
