My wife and I will be leaving Canada on April 24th and arriving Frankfurt on the 25th. From that date until the 23rd of May we'll be exploring not just France but also a few days in Frankfurt,Germany (where we land)most likely 3 days. After that we do want to visit, not in any particular order, Paris (3-4 days),Provence (6 to 7 days), Alsace & Lorraine ( 5 to 7 days)and then, since we're departing from Zurich, perhaps a full day there before departing on the afternoon of the 23rd of May. I don't mind driving after having lived, driven in and survived Costa Rica for one year however I've heard you either rent or buy a vehicle?? which you then re-sell to the original buyer? I'll certainly steer clear of driving in a large city but we do enjoy getting lost in the countryside! I believe that there will be three national holidays (Labour Day, Victory Day and Ascension Day) in May. What affect will this have on hotels, traffic/travelling? Weather should be like a nice Cdn. spring day with the occasional rainy day/days?? We both speak french however we've not used it too much over the past few years. GPS's. Even here in Canada, when we rent a vehicle for travel in Ottawa or Toronto and especially Montreal we get a GPS for city travel. Is it better to buy a GPS here in Canada purchase and download maps of Europe or get one with the car rental? We're inclined to stay in medium priced hotels or even better, small apartments. Given that we'll be travelling in the springtime, is it necessary to book well in advance. I can see doing that for our arrival in Frankfurt and departure from Zurich but in-between these two places, are we taking a chance by not reserving in advance? How about if I leave it at that and see what response we get, besides, if my wife reads this before I send it off I may as well move aside and leave it up to her!!!!
Welcome to Slowtrav, Kevin and Bonita! What a lovely trip you are planning...and there's no better place than Slowtrav for finding kind, generous fellow travellers to share their thoughts with you! Have you found the France section of the message board? That was a great help to me when I was planning my trip to France. Of course, you'll get all kinds of support here for staying in apartments...it's my preferred accommodation, by far. There are lots of amazing rentals in France, so have fun choosing! If you go to the Vacation Rental Review section, you can browse through all of our recommended rentals. Ask anything you like here...there'll be someone to help you with your questions!
Thanks for the weather update for Nunavit..here in Fox Creek, we're enjoying a gorgeously snowy day, with huge fat flakes falling silently, stacking up against the windows and doors...yum!

I guess it is Kevin who posted. So, Kevin, welcome to Slow travel to you and to Bonita, from a fellow Canadian located a bit further down and complaining without shame about our -15C!
Kevin, yours looks like a wonderful one-month of travel.
First advise would be to use the Find button at the top of each screen page to do searches on the various places you will visit and on specific trip organising matters. There is also an Advanced Search option.
Use our forums (in your case: France, Rest of Europe) and search the contents. You will find a considerable quantity of information from discussions on similar topics.
I would post the car (rental or purchase?) issue as a separate discussion, as well as the GPS question (see the Technology on the Go! forum).
By reducing each specific question to a dedicated discussion, you will obtain more focused replies.
