I am very excited to be a part of this board. I recently joined because I amlooking for information about moving to Italy for a long stay and am very pleased at the information I have gathered so far. I fell in love with Italy in 2004 when a friend and I visited Rome, Florence and Venice. I am so excited to get back to immerse myself in the wonderful culture, eat the delicious food, learn the language and just experience the laid back way of life.
I hope to go in Jan 2008 for a month - to start - then I will see how it goes. I am thinking of attending language school in Perugia but wonder if at 42 I am too old since everyone there seems to be so young. Any thoughts from anyone who has been there?
Hey Suzette, welcome to the board. Can't give you any answers about language school but I look forward to seeing people's replies to your question because Perugia was just fabulous and now I am daydreaming of taking language classes in Italy too!
The good/bad thing about ST is that people post about their plans or what they've done, stuff you've never even thought about and voila! more on the wish list.
Thanks for the welcome. Good to hear from another Canuck. I too am Canadian, from Toronto. I am deliriously excited about language school in Italy. I plan to go in Feb for about three weeks for my initiation. When are you planning to take the plunge?
My wife's youngest sister lives in Avon...small world!!
I didn't start learning the language until I was 40 (thought I'd put an end to my wife's parents talking about me in Italian).
Best of luck with your plans. We have been spending a month at a time in Italy for a number of years and plan to start going for 6 months a year as soon as our youngest son graduates (please to heaven) from high school in 4 years.

Hello to Maine and Northern Virginia. Thanks for the welcome. I need some advise. I plan to go to Italy in Feb/Mar 2008 and have chosen to attend Koine in Florence. I plan to use airmiles so I need to book as soon as possible. The thing is, the school has not posted it's schedule for 2008 as yet. Does anyone think I will be shooting myself in the foot by booking before I finalize school? Though, being in Italy is always good under any circumstances. Feedback please.
I would go out and buy a Rosetta Stone language program now, go to Italy in February, and enjoy myself.
If the school turns out to synch up with your travel dates, great. If it doesn't, use your Rosetta Stone skills and start talking to everyone you run into. Italians are EXTREMELY forgiving of grammar and vocabulary lapses and you'll be amazed how quickly you start becoming conversant.
I managed to travel over a good part of the world knowing only the local words for "beer" and "bathroom"....am sure you will do much better than I ever did (truth be told, I was in many places where the second word wasn't even necessary).

That is too funny. I do plan to invest in the Rosetta Stone language since I know about five words in italian. I am going to do just that. I know I will have a great time and learn the language some more. I can always go back to go to language school.
