I registered quite some time ago, and have even posted a few times, but I never introduced myself. I'm an American expat living in southern Italy.
My husband and I are planning a trip to Ireland this summer, and I've already found plenty of invaluable advice on the board. But I'm sure I'll have some questions.
A big hello again, and I look forward to being part of this forum.
I did not marry an Italian ;-) and, therfore, live most of my "real life" in the US...but...we recetly bought a vacation home in Eastern Campania (AV) and hope to spend more and more time there! Where are you?
Hi Karen! It was about the oak apples, just to say that they are called "galle" (sing. galla) in Italian and they are proliferations of the plant's cells due to bacteria, fungi, insects (in the case of the oak).
I have enjoyed reading your blog, thanks! You might be interested to see my site before you visit Ireland - if you Google "hidden dublin" you will find it. We also love Italy and visit the Marche on a regular basis. I'm continually overwhelmed by the italians and their love of life.
Thanks, Giulia, now I know what to call those things. Fortunately only a couple of our oaks have them. By the way, I loved the photos of the Francesco di Giorgio Martini architecture on your blog.
Thanks for the link to your site, pjdscott. I just took a look at it and I think it will be really helpful!
Hello fellow newcomer & expat Americana! I am also new to Slowtrav and Campagnia/Napoli. We arrived a few months ago and are enjoying southern Italy a great deal.
Kevin Clark wrote a wonderful review of sites in Naples ("See Naples & Die") posted here on SlowTravel if you haven't covered the major sites yet.
I will check out your blog, perhaps you have discovered some great wineries and small towns in the Avellino area. We have driven there once but need to make another trip since it's so close.
Sadly, I haven't been to Avellino yet, so I don't know much about the wineries there. (We tend to be more oriented towards the coast- my husband is Neapolitan. )
I loved Kevin Clark's travel notes, especially the section on the Phlegrean fields. I hope to be using them this summer when we'll have some time explore that area. (I should probably post this in that thread.)
Hi! That would be me from the Avellino area :-) Not there though full-time at this point :-(
I'll let you know about the wineries (I have a 6yr old, so we have't done much wine tasting...will need to get a babysitter :-)
My home is in Calitri, so I'm partial to it, of course :-) But I also really love Nusco, as well as Melfi...if you're looking for small, charming hill towns to visit. (My husband and son's favorite spot is the castle at Lagopesole - too small a village for my taste though to just go to wander)
I'm new to slow travel as well, planning my fiance's and my trip to Italy. Love the feel of your blog. Incredible photo of your home area. Did you meet your husband in the states?
Thanks for your comments about my blog. My husband and I actually met in Rome while I was there taking an Italian course. He was there on business, and we were staying in the same hotel. Talk about chance encounters!
Will you be going to Italy for you honeymoon? In my opinion, there's no place better than Italy to be in love.
Karenuccia! You indeed live in a beautiful area. I have visited this winery cellar last year in Avellino: http://www.feudi.it/eng/intro.aspx This is my seventh visit to italy and I will visit the same winery cellar this October. Really looking forward to go back to italy in three weeks time!! Ciao
