My daughter and I will spend a week in Peru at the end of May..arrive in Lima; want to go to Cusco and of course Machu Picchu. Wopuld welcome all advise about how to get there. I did read the trip report that is posted on this site. But still welcome other advice. Once in Cusco, is it advisable to rent a car to tour the Sacred Valley? Any hotel or apt recommendations are also welcome.

Pat, this is a report on our similar trip--with lots of photos. You might find it interesting. Peru You will so enjoy this trip and have many good memories.

I would not recommend driving. We are avid proponents of driving anywhere anytime. But not there or China. I really recommend getting a guide who will provide transportation and good information--taking you to places of interest in the Sacred Valley. You can either arrange that ahead of time or once you are there. There are many.

You can get the train to Machu Picchu, arrange your own hotel and then take the bus to the ruins. You can get the train either in Cusco or Ollantaytampo after the Sacred Valley.
