Hi

My wife and I are going to Thailand (Bangkok and Samui) on vacation and it will be right after my wife's birthday. I was thinking about taking her out for a nice dinner but she also has a thing for picnics. So I was thinking that maybe it would be romantic to have a picnic organized in Bangkok..e.g. in Lumpini park. Obviously I will not be bringing our picnic stuff...but is it possible to get something like this set up? It would require some nice food, some drinks, some flowers, some candles etc...is this achievable...or am I just taking a risk as May is the start of the monsoon season. I guess it can end in failure if it starts pouring down :-)

Hi Gard -
Talk about fond memories! In March & April my father used to take me kite-flying in Lumpini Park (this was a VERY long time ago, in the 1970's) It's a big green area with beautiful acacia, jacarandas, flame trees. My suggestion: the very classy Dusit Thani Hotel is across the street from Lumpini Park, you could always contact the concierge and see about having a special picnic lunch packed for you.
But the Mandarin Oriental Hotel is right on the river and wouldn't it be nice to take a lunchtime riverboat cruise instead?

The two or three times I tried to picnic in Thailand I had to fight a battle with ants. Pick your spot carefully. Take a large bamboo mat (or several).

The little black ants aren't so bad. The big red ones will bite and they sting. See previous comment about river boat cruise. No ants. Big Grin

I spend as little time as possible out in the open under the sun in Bangkok. I think the best time for a picnic would be in the evening. Oddly I had no trouble with mosquitos in Lumpini Park in the evening though there is some water a bit stagnant nearby.
