In November 2009 we went on a birding and wildlife safari to South Africa, and I've finally finished processing and uploading the photos. We began our trip in Dullstroom and Blyde River Canyon, which was more or less strictly for birding, although the scenery is also spectacular. We then spent several days in Kruger National Park followed by several in the Sabi Sand private reserve which adjoins the park (with no fences inhibiting travel by the animals.) We had an amazing trip despite having terrible weather for the entire first week---on and off rain, dense fog, and solid rain for three days in Kruger! Needless to say this was frustrating for photography although we saw plenty of animals and birds. Luckily our 2nd week the skies cleared and we had great weather in Sabi Sand. We had fabulous wildlife sightings--leopard daily in Sabi Sand--and over 300 species of birds. (Of course, we were with a birding guide who helped us find and identify them.)

you can view the photos here:

I'd be glad to answer any questions about visiting this area. We can't wait to go back--now that I've done the 17 hour flight once, I can do it again!

Beautiful pictures. You got some great shots of the animal faces and expressions. Also beautiful and diverse birds.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Marta and Jane! Jane, you always have great trip reports and I look forward to hearing more about Kenya, as we still would like to do East Africa at some point. And go back to South Africa as well!
