Hi I'll be spending a bit of time in Brisbane next month. Can anyone recommend some good restaurants in the city?

Well I've noticed that nobody from Brisbane has helped out. I can't give you any specific restaurants by name, however, have been to Brisbane a few times and can tell you that the public transport system is great if you don't have a car.

South Bank is a must see and there are plenty of restaurants in the area along with markets etc. There are also swimming facilities there, free of charge.

Take a river cruise, walk the Botanical Gardens, visit the historic Treasury building(which is now a casino), go to the trots, visit the main city square, walk the mall etc.

So much to do and see, you will love Brisbane.

Thanks Elly
Thanks for all of the info. I haven't been to Brisbane for a few years - seem to spend more time in Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra. I can't remember the names of places that I went to last time, though must admit I wasn't overwhelmed by the food.

Well, I would avoid the CBD and go to Paddington, Wilston, West End, or Milton.

I used to live in next to West End and like the Caravanserai (Turkish) on Dornoch Terrace at the end of Hardgrave Road, Kim Thanh (Vietnamese) on Hardgrave Road, and Tongue and Groove (mixed ethnic) also on Hardgrave Road. They are all BYO and there is a bottle shop among them. West End is an interesting area where you can find the anarchists and other alternative groups. These places reflect the culture. There are some good downmarket eating places such as Levkas Taverna (Greek)also on Hardgrave Road and Thai-on-High in Gladstone Road, Highgate Hill.

More info on them in the West End Restaurant Guide

Park Road, Milton is the place to be seen. Just park your Porsche in the street outside the restaurants. I have't been there for some time.

I will have to think about the other places and post more later.

For Chinese go to Chinatown in Fortitude Valley, though the area is looking a little seedy these days. Enjoy-Inn in Wickham St is unprepossessing but is reckoned to have great food. The Vung-tau used to do great Yum-Cha.

I don't like eating at South Bank. It's like Darling Harbour. If you have children and go to the artificial beach keep a watchful eye on them for water safety.

There are great views over Brisbane from the restaurant at Mt Cootha. It changes hands from time to time so I don't know if the food is still good.

Gambaro's in Paddington is good for seafood, and there are good Indian restaurants along Caxton Terrace.

Thanks for the range of places John - a good lot to choose from. I'm going to Brisbane for work - for about a week and will have a bit of time to spare. I've been a few times so know my way around. Thanks for the West End tip and link-a few of these places sound really good (i won't go hungry Smile)
