We are planning a trip to Melbourne but would like to stop over in Hawaii. We would be leaving around August 9 and returning at the end of August. What is the best way to travel to both and with which airlines? Any places on the water that come recommended? We do have a place in Melbourne to stay.

Hi nervous traveler,

You have several questions in your post. I'm not certain all of them will get a good audience here in the Rest of the World forum. Let's tackle the first question and last question.

I have flown from Seattle to Sydney via Hawaii. I'm not certain the best way but I used Hawaiian Air. Hawaiian doesn't go to Melbourne.

I'd suggest that you take a look at a couple of the web travel websites such as Expedia, Kayak or Mobissimo and try different combinations. I suspect you'll have to look at carriers such as American, United or some type of codeshare that will fly to Hawaii on an American carrier and then from Honolulu to Melbourne via Qantas.

This will probably be a somewhat complicated route so I'd consider talking to a travel agent.

Regarding where to stay in Melbourne; I've been there once for business and I stayed at the Westin downtown. It was great but expensive. I've heard great things also about St Kitts area of Melbourne.

One additional item; you may want to post just your question about where to stay in Hawaii in the North American forum.

Hi fellow Canuk!

I just flew to Australia last August. If you can, fly Quantas. Excellent customer service, excellent food. Overall, a great flying experience with them.

Which Island are you staying on in Hawaii? I stayed at the Ala Moana Hotel in Oahu and it was great. Right by the water with beautiful views.

I live in Melbourne so sing out if you need any help. Remember that we will still be in Winter but not like yours. You must set aside a Saturday to visit the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground)to watch a very different game of football.

That's more likely to be St Kilda, which is popular.

I second the recommendation to visit the MCG. You could also take a ride on Puffing Billy for some very nice scenery and a bit of fun. Melbourne has lots to do.
