Hi all who have been or are planning to be in South Africa,

My husbands dream is a trip to So. Africa and I am in charge of making this dream come true. I am a real researcher of trips (mostly to Italy and England with two to Provence) and get great enjoyment out of it...I love to buy books, watch as many videos as I can, check out everything on the internet (mostly using this wonderful site!) but this is the first time I can honestly say I'M AT A LOSS! I don't have the first idea of where to even start! It seems the possibilities are endless, the Safari's are endless and on and on....(I've already read the trip reports here...thank you one and all...So. Africa seems to be amazing!)

We like birding, animals, nature, mountains, water, adventure...so where do we start? We'd like to go this Fall at the end of our convention time in Italy which is October 8th....

Help.... Not Worthy

I like getting a guidebook with pictures when I start to research vacation. We really liked the Eyewitness Travel Guide for South Africa. Fodor's also similar guide - Exploring South Africa and there are a couple of guidebooks that just cover safaris such Fodor's or Frommers. I would recommend taking a look at one or two of the guidebooks to narrow down where you want to go. Don't forget to also look at Botswana for safari locations.

Also check your local travel books stores for slideshows on Africa. We went to a great slide show on safaris in southern Africa which helped us plan.

There are lots of options for travel and safari. Think about what you want
- Full tour with all arrangements or self-drive
- How much is in your budget. Do you want to stay at the top of the line locations such as Sabi Sands?
- How much time do you have? To really take advantage of the facilities at a safari camp you need to stay at least 2 nights minimum.
- Where else do you want to go in SA? Do you want to see Cape Town? How about the Garden route? Beaches?

Once you know where you want to safari or want opinions on different camps, then I would recommend taking a look at the Fodor's forum on Africa. It has a lot of good recommendations for different safari camps and companies to use.

We knew we wanted to only visit western region of SA because we wanted to see the spring wildflowers which made our planning easier. The Eyewitness guide had a couple great pages on the best places to see the flowers. From that I did a lot of googling to find out times and routes. I did all my own bookings (hotel, car, tours) over the web and it was fine. Everyone was very responsive and great to work with. We added Namibia since it easy to get to from Cape Town. I did use a company, Cardboard Box, to do my bookings in Namibia. They were recommended on Fodors and were excellent to work with.

Good luck!

Hi

South Africa is very nice indeed and it has a lot to offer. From the safaris in the Kruger park, beaches along the coast, mountains, cities etx. Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities that I know of and I would love to go back there even if I have been there 3 times. The drive along the south coast (Garden Route) is very nice with small towns with great beaches. If you are into wine you can visit the wine area around Stellenbosch while you are in Cape Town. My wife comes from Joburg so we went there a couple of years ago. I have posted a trip report on my homepage http://gardkarlsen.com/johannesburg_south_africa_2004.htm . During the trip we also went on a safari in the Kruger park and it was wonderful. Check out some more details in http://gardkarlsen.com/djuma_vuyatela_safari.htm.

It is always hard to know where to start when visiting a new country. What to see and what to do depends on your time, money, interest etc. I guess the traditional trip would be a couple of days in Joburg, Kruger park (they say that the drive there is beautiful), Cape Town for a few days, drive along the coast. But there is so much to see and in the end you have to just choose a few things as it is normally time that you run low on when you go on vacation. Good luck onthe planning...get in touch if you have any questions.

Regards
Gard
