Can you recommend a B&B and/or wineries in the wine region North of Adelaide? I'm looking to stay a week in an area near Adelaide that would be considered the "Napa Valley" of South Australia (e.g. concentrated number of wine tasting rooms, beautiful wineries, excellent restaurants, etc). Helpful websites would be appreciated. Cheers!

I will email Deb who lives in Australia and see what she has to say.

If you are looking for a vacation rental, there is an agency for Australia. Amy used them for an Italian rental and liked them and her place. Here is the link to their Italy web site. The link I had for their Australia one isn't working.

JT, one of the best websites on wineries, accommodation & local information for South Australia is : www.southaustralia.com The Barossa Region is north of and closest to Adelaide and there is some good detail about this area on the website. Its a great area to visit.

Deb emailed me that she is asking some of her friends in Australia for advice and will post next week. She has been affected by these horrible fires near Sydney.

This is my first time on this board, so I hope I'm doing this right!

There are two main wine regions near Adelaide, the Barossa Valley which is about an hour's drive from Adelaide and the Clare Valley which is a bit further. The Barossa is more well-known. I did a quick search on Google and found these for you:
www.barossa-region.org
www.atn.com.au
www.skybusiness.com/barossavalley
www.clarevalley.com.au
www.classiccountry.org.au
www.pgtclare.com.au

Adelaide, in my opinion, is not the most interesting of cities and it's quite small, so you could spend 1 or 2 days there then head to the wine areas. Other well-known wine areas in Australia are Margaret River, south of Perth in WA, Hunter Valley, in NSW, Yarra Valley, about an hour east of Melbourne, and the area near Milawa and Rutherglen, on the Murray River near the Vic/NSW border. We grow a lot of wine here and I believe quite a bit is exported to the UK and other countries.

We stayed in Adelaide city recently for a short stay so can recommend a reasonably priced hotel if you need one. It was called something like King Williams All Suites and was very central - let me know if you need help finding it.

Kangaroo Island, a ferry ride away from Adelaide, is quite popular, especially for seeing Australian wildlife. We've not been there - yet!!

Hope this helps a bit with your planning.

Welcome to the message board Kay! You did great on your first posting. The message board screws up on links - so you need to leave a blank line before and after a link to get it to appear on its own line. I edited your message to do this. Great bunch of links.

We have many Australians on this message board!

Hi JT... sorry took so long to get back to you with my little snippets of info, but I have been waiting to hear from my friend who lives in Adelaide. He is somewhat of a wine buff... and a seasoned traveller! so I figured he would have good ideas. I will just transcribe now what he sent me...

"The wine areas north of Adelaide are excellent. The Barossa is a little crowded for my liking (it is only 45 mins from Adelaide), but of course the wineries are excellent. The most picturesque (& with great wine), is Seppeltsfield. A good B&B is "Collingrove", a gracious old home at Angaston.

A little further north is the Clare Valley which I think is much better than the Barossa. Some wineries I can recommend visiting are Crabtrees at Watervale, Sevenhill at Sevenhill!, & Skilogolee near Clare. The Pikes winery near Sevenhill is also excellent, as is Wendouree well worth a look.

We stayed at a superb B&B at Sevenhill called "Thorn Park". Its pricey, but is absolutely the best experience you could ever have. It is right in the centre of the wine area so it is well placed, but is on a side road so it is extremely quiet.

Another winery I could recommend is in the Adelaide Hills -you could visit en route to the Barossa. It is called Chain of Ponds at Gumeracha, and is excellent. On weekends they also serve wonderful Italian food. "

So thats it.... hope we have been of some help for you. Enjoy your visit!

Deb
