One of my students gave me a packet of a powdered beverage with yuzu and honey. It sounds really good, but with my allergies, I thought I had better look up all the ingredients to make sure I could drink it.

One of the ingredients was "kuchinatsu" written in katakana. I cannot find it in any dictionary that I have or on line. I'm very wary of the "natsu" written in katakana because it could be "nuts". I'm allergic to peanuts, but not tree nuts.

Anybody have any info on this? Thanks.

Buddy, thanks for the info. I went to the page but that is way, way out of my league. I saw the picture and wrote down the plant name (in English). It's comforting to know it isn't "nuts", but it makes me wonder how somebody came up with "kuchinatsu" in katakana.

There is an English version of the same article for the plant, although it's not as detailed.

In terms of where the katakana word came from, according to the Japanese article, the name may mean "there is no mouth" because of the shape of the fruit (the fact it doesn't crack when it matures).
