Oh, I wish I had seen this earlier. We have cousins in Australia and have wanted to go and meet them in person, but the high fares put us off. But this was a great fare. Sigh. Maybe another time.

Prices include fuel surcharges $220 from the US. Additional insurance and fuel surcharges of up to US$23 per flight will apply to additional Australian domestic flights booked if the fare allowed add-on. US and foreign taxes, fee including September 11th Security Fee, are an additional $118 to $135 depending upon itinerary.

Some but not all. The fuel surcharge is included but not taxes. November would be a good time to fly. It would be nicer to fly the Airbus than the 747 that they normally use. Boy is that plane packed in.

I just looked at how much it would cost to do the same flight they're offering from LAX to Melb for US $1116 inc taxes but from Melb to LAX..... AUS$1979 (that's US $1868) was the cheapest I could find!

Because it is the first flight from USA to Oz, Qantas offered a special deal in US for promotion and to boost tourism. The offer was not really available in Oz.

In future try to book on the 380 for that sector because the seats are bigger than the 747 and there is more room in economy.

Boy these fares look great. Unfortunately, I'll be down under for over 45 days--which killed all the deals. My itinerary goes Washington, DC-Fiji-Sydney-Brisbane-Auckland-Washington, DC.

Needless to say, I paid a bit more than the airfares discused with all the stops. As strange as it may seem, stopping in Fiji and Sydney dropped the airfare rather than adding to it. Flying straight to Brisbane was more. I kept getting routed through Fiji when I played with the airfares and finally decided to see what would happen if I stopped there. The fare went down.
