I will be visiting Buenos Aires in Jan. 2010 where my friend leaves but I stay. I want to stay in Recoleta as I am alone & therefore location & safety are paramount. I saw 2 places: The Art Hotel & Recoleta Apart Hotel (Guido)-in terms of safety, location & proximity to things-can anyone please guide me?? Do you know these places?? Or can you recommend something please?
Re Salta-can anyone suggest accommodations right in the centre of Salta that is reasonable
please? Many thanks

Patty Sue, I was hoping one or two of our members that have been to Argentina would jump in and give some advice. We have had a couple of members visit.

Here is an old but useful trip report and here are a a few reviews of hotels in Argentina. Another member also stayed at the first B&B - Posada Palermo and also recommended it.

You can also try a search on this forum. Even though Search is not currently finding all posts, I tried it and found several posts. As I mentioned above, we don't have a lot of posts or members who have visited Argentina. If you don't get enough information, you might try Trip Advisor's Buenos Aires forum which is much more active.

Thank You Marta-I will try the loi suites but it may be too expensive. I was hoping someone would comment on these choices in Recoleta-Prince Hotel on arenales 1627; Callao Suites on av. callao 1062; Ulises Recoleta Suites on ayucucho; art hotel on 1268 azcuenaga; or recoleta apart hotel on 1948 guido

Many thanks for your suggestions Marta-perhaps someone will answer

I Patty
Sorry I didn't see this post before, I hope I can help you. All the hotels you mentioned are very well located. I only have direct references from Art Hotel. I know the rooms are small but the hotel is very nice and the service is very good.
But if you will be staying for a week or more, it will be much more convenient for you to stay in an apartment. There are hundreds to choose from. If safety is a concern for you, you can search for one that has 24 hour security, but this is usually not necessary in Recoleta. I commented about apartment rentals in a previous thread. Let me know if you need more help.

Thank you Sandy-I know someone here in Montreal that rented an apt in Recoleta on Billinghurst for a month for about $759.
Have you ever heard or know about the prince Hotel on arenales 1627? Or Callao Suites on av callao 1062 (callaosuites.com.ar/deptos.html)
and there is also Ulises Recoleta Suites on ayacucho. Do you know any of these? Yes,I heard that the art hotel is good but I was hoping to pay a bit less,at the same time,I don't want a dump either.
Let me know Thank you so much

No I'm sorry but I don't know about the other hotels. I've checked the Prince Hotel website and it looks no bad at all, the location is perfect, and the price is unbeatable. It has some good reviews on Tripadvisor too.
Ulises looks nice but it is a hotel boutique, so the prices will be much higher. If you are not looking for luxury, maybe you should give the Prince a chance.

Sandy-you're right. I looked at the prices for Ulises-it's expensive. Pity! The only thing I'm worried about with the Prince Hotel is the location on Arenales 1627-it seems far from the main spots of recoleta so would it be safe for me to walk from there to the main parts of recoleta? The Callao seems to be a busy street. Unless I reconsider the Art Hotel or rent. Which location do you think is best. I'm thinking of the safety factor.
Thank you

You shouldn't worry so much about safety. Both locations (Art hotel and Prince) are perfect. The only advantage of Art Hotel over Prince is that it is closer to the subway. Santa Fe is busier than Callao, but it is great for walking, full of nice shops, and the convenience of transportation. I love both locations. If you find an apartment in that area, or anywhere in Recoleta, it will be perfect too.

Thank you Patty. I'll be happy to answer all your questions.
I realized that I didn't respond about Salta. Maybe it will be better that you contact me by email regarding accommodation and flights to Salta.

Sandy, it may be of interest to the entire Slow Travel community if the exchange of information on Salta would occur on this forum rather than by private email. You may post here and provide links where applicable and they would stored on the website for possible future reference.

Hi Doru
I'm sorry, I didn't provide any information about Salta because I don't know the area as well as I know Buenos Aires. I will have to ask a local travel agent and for that I need exact dates and personal details. But you can see I provided as much information as I could about hotels and apartments in Buenos Aires, and I'll be happy to keep providing help in the future.

oops-one more thing-because I am alone I'd be afraid of walking on side streets-better to be right in the centre of things(re Salta) at the same time I'd like to keep my costs down. THANK YOU

Re renting an apt-I've had 2 experiences-one great & one bad one-the pictures didn't represent at all what it portrayed so I'm leery plus I was reading a review of someone who had rented in Buenos Aires(recoleta) and when she needed to contact someone at the apt could not.

Sandra-Scarlett told me about you-that she LOVES your website & even though she is now living in BA-still checks it out! Good one Sandy. I am checking out the art suites hotel, ever hear of Chateau Blend in Recoleta? Because it's hot in January am I better off finding a hotel with swimming pool?
Re Lan airlines-I am finding the fares expensive-am I better off getting tickets through a local?

Thanks, I know Scarlett is a big fan of my blog and she is always making very nice comments about it, which I appreciate very much.
Art Suites is very good, greatly located, and they are convenient since they combine the comfort of an apartment with the service of a hotel. But the price is almost the same as any hotel, and they don’t have a swimming pool, which you may make good use of in January.
I still think you should consider renting an apartment. If you stick to the most reliable apartment rental agencies I’m sure you won’t have any problems.
Domestic flights are very expensive, and I don’t think you will find better prices from a local travel agent than purchasing them online.
Re: Salta, I remembered a hotel some clients stayed at in the center of Salta, and they were very satisfied:

For side trips, a must do is Iguazu falls, 1 or 2 nights there is perfect. Mendoza is also great but it is recommendable to spend at least 3 or 4 days to fully enjoy it. Mendoza is very nice if you are interested in visiting the wine country, or making outdoor activities (rafting, trekking, horseback riding, mountain climbing). Day trips to an estancia or Colonia are of course worthwhile.

Thank you Sandy-I think I will consider a rental but "with" a swimming pool since I hear it is impossibly hot at this time of yr. Someone suggested madi@baculturalconcierge.com
The reason being that she was able to rent plus have the services of a concierge that proved to be invaluable otherwise you rent & then you're on your own. Ever hear of this one?
I will look into that hotel.
On another note, ever hear of Guido Palace Hotel on guido 1780 y Callao?
Thank you

I don't know Guido Palace Hotel. It is very well located, but for the pictures it looks like an old, outdated, low key hotel. Of course the price must be very reasonable. It gets some mixed reviews on Tripadvisor.
