Phillip Island: Only two hours from Melbourne, this popular tourist area is a haven for wildlife (penguins, koalas, seals) and is rich in culture and history.

A highlight of my life was watching the Fairy Penguins roll in on the waves at dusk on Phillip Island......it is a memory that always makes me smile!

When I was a young girl (as opposed to now when I am an old girl Wink)we would go to Phillip island to see the penguins and there would quite likely be no one else on the beach. There were no concrete boardwalks or displays or tourist buses, you just sat on the beach with your torch and waited for the penguins to walk up the beach around you. If you sat very still, they came very close, totally unafraid. It was wonderful.

Concrete boardworks? Tourist busses? It sure was different in 1975!! Just a few people hiding in the dunes with flashlights - or torches, as they say down under.
