Just to be clear here: "The Nation" for which the link is given is not the prestigious US magazine, but a Thai publication. And the article's reference is "agencies".
Not that I am saying this means that the choice did not occur. Just that these are self-promoting publications that are not necessarily in the business of giving news in context.

No Ma'am. The Nation, a Bangkok English language newspaper (often critical of what goes on in Thailand and giving news in context) is reporting the results of a subscriber poll from Travel and Leisure Magazine (the prestigious American Express magazine). The poll has nothing to do with self promoting. "The Agencies" is a reference to news agencies which reported the poll.

Don't get me wrong, I like Bangkok. But looking at the figures, might Bangkok have won because so many tourists go there? With the present troubles, it will possibly slide out of the top ten next year.
