It looks like this trip may come together...my two daughters (ages 19 & 22) and I will be traveling to BA this November. We'll be there for a week, and I've begun to realize that there is a plethora of wonderful apartments out there! I have noticed that most of them ask for rent up front, along with a security deposit. The security deposit is anywhere from a week to two week's rent and in cash most of the time. Do any of you have personal experience with a particular individual/company?...one that you trust, that is fair, etc., etc...? I'm fearful of putting that much cash out there---what recourse would I have should they whimsically decide not to return my deposit to me? That said, I'm beginning to think that the Palermo, San Telmo, or Recoleto neighborhoods would be good ones - historic, quirky, lots of shops, groceries, cafes, etc., around and the metro close by as well...any helpful thoughts out there? It's dangerous asking because I'm just about on information overload Thank you!

Hi! Almost all the rental companies work in the same way: they require a deposit that ranges from 20 to 50% to secure the reservation, that depending on the agency can be made via PayPal or wire transfer, and the rest of the rental has to be payed cash at check in, along with the security deposit, which is returned at the end of your stay. If you stick to the most renowned rental agencies I think you won't have any problems getting the deposit back. Usually they return it in the same sealed enveloped as it was handed by the client. But in case something goes wrong, which I doubt, you have many resources, such as Consumer Protection offices and Tourist Police departments where you can file a complaint.
There are hundreds of rental companies, but I recommend that you use one of the established and most renowned. I can recommend:
Sandy...thank you! I had already bookmarked your blog for its great information. Your recommendations are just what I need...there are SO many different companies out there, horrow stories on other sites of security deposits not being returned, etc., that I just didn't know quite what to do...I'll stick to the companies you've recommended and see what i come up with

HI Shankins I'm glad you found useful information on my blog. Please let me know about the apartments you find, I will be very happy to advise about their locations!
when you rent an apartment in buenos aires, you have to send the deposit previously, I tell you why, because is like a ''guarantee'' of the apartment, in my case I back the deposit when the client leaves the property (check out)it is a security in case that something inside of the apartment it's broken. if the company where you rent is serious you haven't any problems. I have my listing apartments here so you can check out.
regards,

Well...no airmiles yet, and now it's too late for this November. I'm hopeful for possibly late May, although I'd rather go to BA in the spring than in the fall...but it's ok. Thank you all for your help...maybe a bit down the road

I don't think it's too late for November, maybe you still have a chance. But the fall is great in BA too. April is one of the best months to visit, and May isn't bad either, it will be cooler but not too cold. Let us know about your progress.
