We'll be heading to India with our then three year old, and wonder if it's worth it to stop in Singapore for a few days and check it out. The plan is to stop anyway, just to break up the flights.

I see an opportunity to see a little bit of a pretty cool city, but I'm not sure what to see with such a young one or how hard it will be to make it happen, etc.
Any advice is welcome!

I love Singapore and always stop over on my way to Europe. Only a 5 hour flight from Perth.

Sentosa Island is a great place to start with your child. Plenty to see and do for all ages.

Night Zoo safari is also a wonderful place to see. Quiet and magical and you get to see night feeding.

I second Elly's recommendations. I think Singapore would be a perfect stopover. It is very clean and efficient. There is a great metro that you can use to get around to different areas in the downtown (cbd). The taxis are also very good and honest. You do have to take taxis to get to some of the sites like the night zoo and botanical garden. I was lucky and there was a free evening concert in the garden. It was great seeing all the families picnicking and enjoying the cooler evening.

I also liked the different ethnic areas. I picked up a couple of brochures on walking self-tours for both Chinatown and Little India. I found Little India fascinating since it was my first trip to Asia. I also went to the wet market in Little India. Chinatown has lovely architecture and temples.

Probably the hardest thing will be the heat and walking in the heat with the 3yr old. There are lots of underground malls especially on Orchard Road to escape to if it is too hot.

Food is also really great if you like SE Asian food. There are many food courts and hawker stalls. The food can be pretty spicy.

The Mall at Bugis Junction between Victoria Street and Middle Road has a fountain in which kids are free to frolic. + the mall ain't bad for shopping, either.

Singapore is great city for all ages.

We have been there about a dozen times

Consider visiting Little India or China town in Singapore or going the Night Zoo safari, and Jurong Bird Park

I confess I have no advice to offer for Singapore, though it is a hop across from India, for I have'nt been there, so far!
However, India is a different matter altogether & would certainly need a bit of research, on your part, before you are able to cobble up a fine itinerary.
Apart from the normal, well known destinations, like Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, which constitute the Golden Triangle, you have some delightful rural properties far from the woefully crowded city centres. These destinations are the Fort-Palace Hotels - luxurious, superb locations, fine 'Shikar (Hunting) dish' menus & great ambience. Some of the finest that come to my mind immediately are: www.shahpurabagh.com / www.sardargarh.in / www.rohetgarh.com etc. All these locate in Rajasthan. The best time for this destination is between October to early march.
The Foot Hills & Tea Estates is another area of great interest. The colonial bungalows with fireplaces, wooden floors & some of the most spectacular Himalayan sceneries, where ridge upon ridge of heavily wooded hills, culminate into eternal snows! The best time for such destinations would be 15 March onwards, till the advent of monsoons. Some of the most delightful properties include: The Cecils / Wildflower Hall (www.oberoihotels.com ) / Judges Court, Pragpur & the Glenburn Tea Estate (Darjeeling).
Tigers find their last refuge in India...still around with us, in despite of her hungry neighbours! The Corbett & Bandhavgarh offer great oppurtunity to see the feline race in all it's glory.
For the Slow Traveller these are havens, Far from the Madding Crowds!

wow - thanks VP Singh! The Tea Estates sound heavenly!!
Our India itinerary is pretty taken care of - we're going with my sister-in-law who is from Delhi. It will be time for my nephew's Thread Ceremony, so there will be lots of time in the north, then I'm pretty sure it's down to Goa we go. :-)

After reading all this and doing some more research, I'm torn! It looks like Amsterdam will actually break up the trip better - more evenly. I sooooo want to see Singapore... but Amsterdam is another place I've never been and have wanted to see. What to do?!

Try to get yourself a copy of Singapore travel guide upon your arrival in Changi Airport. The guide is usually good enough for you to determine where you could start off your discovery of Singapore.

Of course you will never go wrong with the popular Singapore tourist attractions such as the Singapore Zoo , Singapore Night Safari (Night Zoo), Jurong Bird Park , Sentosa Island and the Singapore Flyer etc.

Chijmes, Mohammed Sultan Road, Robertson Quay and Holland Village are some happening Singapore nightlife spots you wouldn't want to miss.
