We are driving to Bruges(sp?) from Normandy. We have heard the parking within the main Old Town area is difficult. My question is this: Would it be better to stay outside the main area and take the bus into the city each day, or stay in a b and b in the main market area and just park in a garage. We will be there for three days. If you have stayed further out, do you have a suggestion for a nice b and b or hotel? We will be driving in from Amiens. Thanks so much for you help!!
I would opt for staying in town. I'm not sure what people mean by Brugge being difficult; I assume this refers to driving. So if you will have a car, it would be best to either leave it at the outskirts of town or, possibly stay at a hotel with access to a garage (probably a more expensive option).
Brugge is a small, walkable city and I think one misses a lot by staying far outside.
There is an underground parking area near the bus station. Walking into town from there is the preferred option. You wouldn't want to drive within the town as you will be busy dodging pedestrians and won't see anything.
Market stalls are set up near the bus station/parking area on Saturday mornings.

Definitely stay IN the centre. There is a huge parking lot next to the train station (Parking Station) that costs only 2.50 euro for 24 hours. With your parking ticket you can get free bus tickets (at the ticket booth at the bus stops, you can't miss it) to/from the centre. There are also a few parking garages in the centre but those are much more expensive. In some streets you can park for free on the street, but most streets have parking meters.
Brugge is a small walkable city, great parking on the beltways around it; take the bus but if you stay by Katelijnestraat you can walk to the center very easily.
We stayed at this B&B just outside of the city. We drove to town and parked at the train station. From there it's a short walk or bus ride to the city center. B&B owners spoke English and were very helpful in suggesting things to see. Very nice B&B too.
