I'm going to Egypt in Feb. REad that you can take probiotics to prevent or at least lessen the severity of stomach problems. Has anyone tried this?

Also, any other tips will be appreciated.

Janice - if you are still monitoring this, did the probiotics help? How was your trip? We are off to Egypt, doing the usual itinerary - Cairo, Nile cruise, Abu Simbel, and either Alexandria or El Alamein - over the December school holidays.

Some ways to lessen stomach problems:

1. Drink only bottled water.
2. Brush and rinse your teeth/toothbrush with only bottled water.
3. Only eat vegetables that have been peeled (i.e. - no skins as this is where the contamination is: on the outside of the the vegetable).
4. No lettuce

We've traveled to 47 countires (including countires on the suspect list - India, Egypt, Indonesia, China, etc) so far and never had a stomach problem - just drank bottled water or bottled beverages (Coke, Pepsi, etc). Shied away from raw salads. We watch what 'street' foods we eat to make sure they are cooked but we've found if a restaurant is busy with locals it is probably fine to eat there - so far so good.

Also, never had any shots or took any medicines. This is ironic, the worst incident in all our travels was a sandwich eaten that we bought in the Charlotte, North Carolina airport - that caused a day sickness not to be discussed. Garlic Man
