Hello all,
The Arles/Avignon discussion got me thinking about the hotels I've really enjoyed in France over the last 20 years or so. They all have (had) a kind of dilapidated, but, maintaining-standards-homey feel. The Calendal in Arles -- the old one, (and the Arletan) would qualify. The Old Banniere de France in Laon(which isn't a hotel anymore). La Fossardiere in Omonville-la-Petite. I could go on. Old fashioned, off-kilter floors, usually various pets around ... but nice places. Think chenille bedspreads! There's a uniquely French thing about these kind of hotels, but they're a dying breed. I wish those of us who love these old places could recommend them before they're remodeled. Oh, the Hotel France in Bergerac ... that great old place in Orange ... The one right down from the donjon in Rouen with the quintessentially french wallpaper ...

*sigh*
Cheers!
Alecto

Le Hameau, just down the hill from St-Paul-de-Vence.

La Grillade au Feu de Bois, near Le Lac. Nicely old fashioned, and with the only window screens we ever saw in Provence.

The Château de Roussan, outside St-Rémy: a real 18th-century château.

Hi

Many of the rural Logis de France hotels are "quaint".

They are all privately owned, and I enjoy staying in them.
