Did I not mention Andrew Hussey's Paris: A Secret History? Weighty, fascinating - and an antidote to the regular schoolbook and museum history of the great and good.
...science, art, history, culture, set in Belle Époque Paris. I've always enjoy non-fiction that reads like a good story, & this book did not disappoint.

Thanks everyone for their great recommendations. It was fun compiling this list. I have many books I want to read. Cigalechanta - The Elegance of the Hedgehog looked great. I've got it on reserve at the library.
