Does anyone have any suggestions for Robert? I'm going to link it to the Rest of Europe also to see if we can catch the attention of any Swiss experts.

If it is more than one of you travelling, a rental car will work out cheaper and allows you more flexibility (Swiss trains don't run much in early morning or late at night). If you have a rental note that you cannot drive to Zermatt center, you'll have to leave the car in the nearby village of Taesch (shuttle trains to Zermatt every 15 mins or so).

To check train prices and schedules go to www.sbb.ch

A rental car for one day? we will be hiking the majority of the time so have no need for a car. RR

I've been holding off on replying to this posting until my return from hiking the Haute Route. I checked out the three or four shuttle services available, and originally intended to take a bus from Geneva to Chamonix. After experiencing some glitch with the online reservation system at two of the services that prevented them from accepting my American credit card, I arrived without a shuttle reservation. I'm glad I did.

Instead of the bus, I opted to take a train to Martigny and transfer to the MontBlanc Express to Chamonix. I think the scenic train ride was well worth the minor additional expense and time (4 hrs vs. 2.5 hrs; 72 francs vs 35 euros). The route of the train brings you down a different valley than the one you will hike out of Argentiere. It's a true delight I particularly enjoyed the timbered alpine railway stations.
