I am wondering if at CDG we must have our luggage with us when getting the customs tax-free stamps upon departure. At some European airports, for example at the Florence airport, the luggage can be checked in, as the customs person doesn't ask to see the merchandise.

My husband packed the things we bought in our checked baggage so we didn't have them with us.
The officials behind the desk refused to take our documentation without the goods so no refund for us.
