I have looked for and could not find a consolidated listing of restaurants for France anywhere on this board. I had previously started a list, and recently expanded it, which I will post here. The list is from recommendations made by people on other travel boards, and not necessarily ones that I have visited. This kind of list, obviously, is hit and miss, as one person's meal of a lifetime is another's mediocre fare. I did not take any recommendations from this board, feeling that would not be appropriate. Instead, I will ask that others contribute to the list, if it is of interest to you.

FRANCE: ***************

A very handy menu interpreter for those who cannot speak French is “Marling Menu-Master for France.” Tiny book easy to carry along, and the chapters correspond to menu headings: appetizers, soups, eggs, fish, main courses, desserts, etc). It will help you avoid unpleasant surprises.

AIX-EN-PROVENCE:

Les Bistro Latin, 18 Rue de la Couronne, 13100. Tel: 04-42-38-22-88. Very good. Fixed menu. For less than $20 US, includes appetizer, entrée, dessert and maybe wine. Quaint and intimate and delicious. RSBB

ARLES:

Soleileis, at rue Fantom, which can be reached from Place du Forum. The absolutely best ice cream in all of France. Fresh homemade only. A good place to rest and drink tea/coffee or have that delicious ice cream. RSBB

DINARD: (Britanny)

Restaurant Didier Meril, on Rue Yves Verney. Superb seafood. Doesn’t look like much from outside, but food is heavenly.

LYON:

Le P’tit Bouchon Chez Georges, on rue Garnet. Food is hearty and very French. Excellent. RSBB

NICE:

Restaurant La Tapenade, 6 Rue Ste Reparate, Vieux Nice. Fabulous food with reasonable prices. Great smoked salmon pasta. RSBB

Au Soleil, at the corner of rue de Russie and rue d’Italie, near the Hotel St. Georges. Great value meals, and the food is excellent…not gourmet, but just flat out good! The waiter/owner Alain speaks good English and has a great sense of humor, and is very helpful. Three course meal for two, including wine, was $21.

PARIS:

Roger La Genouille, 26 rue des Grand Augustin, Paris 75006. Tel: 01 56 24 24 34 Website: www.rogerlagrenouille.com. Specialty is frog legs and snails, both delicious, and other regional specialties. --culturequeen

Café du Marche, on Rue Cler. Great house white wine that is inexpensive. Great food. RSBB

l’Avion Delices, 32 Rue Vieille du Temple. Just desserts, but some of the finest desserts ever created. Try the pralines. RSBB

La Croque au Sel. 131 Rue Saint Dominique. In the Eiffel Tower area. Cozy neighborhood café. Warm and friendly place, homey and comfortable. Great food. RSBB

Le Bistrot du 7eme. 56 bd de Latour-Maubourg, near rue Cler. Service and food some of the best in Paris. Prices are reasonable. RSBB

Vellys, on rue Lamartine, directly across the street from Lamertine Opera Hotel at 39 rue Lamartine. A place where locals go. Had three plus hours of delicious fun. Great food, great wine, great coffee, great service, at reasonable prices.

Le Crepe Ste. Louis, 84 rue Ste.-Louis-en-I’Iles. Great crepes for brunch, lunch or snacks. Prepared by the friendly proprietress who is also the server. RSBB

Boulangerie, 112 rue St. Dominiique. Great food. Our favorite in Paris. RSBB

L’endroit, 24 rue des Tournelles, in the Bastille area. The owner is the waiter. The food is great, and never paid more than $25 per person. RSBB

Le Toulouse, 86 rue Saint Dominique, in the 7eme in Paris. Specialize in the foods of the southwest of France. Food delicious, prices reasonable (10 € range), wait staff friendly. Chocolate soufflé for dessert was incredible. RSBB

Bistro de Papa, on Avenue Bosquet around the corner from the Ecole Militaire metro stop in the 7eme. Steak, chicken and trout are all delicious. Desserts are huge. –RSBB

Au Babylone on rue Babylone behind Bon Marche. Reasonably priced prix fixe menue and a la carte menu. Great lunches and dinners. RSBB

Laduree, on rue Royale, by the Church of the Madeleine. This place is great for a morning or afternoon tea or hot chocolate break. The hot chocolate will blow your socks off. Open 07:30 AM to 07:30 PM (19:30). Don’t be turned off if there is a wait, as it moves quickly. – RSBB

Pot de Terre, off of rue Moufftard, in the 5th . Salmon was excellent and food is great. RSBB

La Rotisserie Galande, on rue Galande, a half block from St. Severin cathedral. Good plain food. Rotisserie meats with fresh veggies of the day. French soup is great. Waiter spoke English. RSBB.

Tarte Julie on rue Cler. Both entrée and dessert tarts are highly recommended. RSBB

Auberge de la Reine Blanche, on the Ile St. Louis. Very small place, but the food is SUPERB! RSBB

Apollon, 24 rue Jean Nicot-Invalides, in the 7th. Tel: 01 45 55 68 47. A Greek restaurant in Paris, with great foods. Also has a selection of vegetarian foods. Customers are almost entirely French. Blue and white décor reminiscent of Santorini Island. RSBB

Brasserie Ribe, 15 avenue de Suffren, 75007 Paris, in the rue Cler area. Very reasonable, and good food. Sat at an outside table, and heard good comments from other customers. RSBB

Leo le Lion, in the rue Cler area. Some of the best food in Paris, for about $35 American, including wine. A small and cozy place with friendly staff. Reservations suggested. (Note: some reports suggest ownership has changed hands, and service is not as good). RSBB

Thanks so much for all of that. I'm sure that Pauline will want to include it on the website. Yes, it's true that SlowTrav has been very Italy-oriented but there are plenty of people around here who travel to France and will be very happy to have your restaurant recs.

Assuming that you'd like it to be included on the website proper, I'm not sure when it'll appear. Pauline and Steve are in Switzerland and Italy for the next month. In their absence, Chris is doing some webmistress stuff, but I'm not sure how extensive that will be. When Pauline comes back it might be the perfect time to make a new page for restaurants in France.

Thanks again.

David, usually in NYC

Marv,

My thanks as well! I'm not sure exactly how Pauline will want to handle this page in the France sectionso I'll leave that for her when she returns, but in the meantime maybe we can collect France restaurant recommendations in this message board topic from others to add to your list. I have a few to add -- as soon as I look up the details -- and I'm sure others will too.

First, I did a search on Google for "durable medical equipment rentals - France" and came up with this:

http://www.independentliving.org/links/links-travel-and-leisure.html

The above site contains a lot of information for the disabled traveler or for those who might need some assistance, such as needing oxygen. Somewhere in the huge number of links in that sight should be some information that your patient should find useful.

Other possible sites may come up by varying the search parameters.

As far as how to do a new post, when you first go into the France message board, look for the button near the top labeled "New Topic." Click on it. I see Amy has started a new topic for you, now. smile
