We are at the final planning stages for our Christmas Trip, which finishes with four days in Paris.

Are there any suggestions or recommendations of what to miss and what not to miss at this time of year?

I note many things are closed, and I am quite unsure how cold Paris will be in January!

Apart from footwear and warm waterproof clothes, are there any must have's/must do's in mid winter?

The musée du cheval in the beautiful historical hippodrome of Chantilly always puts on a great show for December.
Also, check the SPAM and brocante websites for the calendar of street fairs. Great shopping for antique and for regional food specialties.

We spent 8 days in Paris in January, a couple of years ago. Every year is different of course, but for us the temp was in the 30's (F). Some gray skies, some sun. We walked many miles each day and were plenty warm with big scarves and sturdy shoes and socks.
We loved being there in January, as we got a good look at the city without many tourists. Our neighborhood for the week, the Marais, was full of locals. The only thing that was dismal was a gray windy walk through the Tuileries, when I couldn't help but wish for some green leafy trees and happy families. There were still outdoor food displays and markets. Restaurants were cozy, and featured wonderful stews and comfort food. Wine bars always had empty tables for us. All in all, it was fabulous and I think you'll enjoy your January stay. I'd certainly go back then.

Thank you both very much Smile

I'll check the links, I had not though any outdoor markets would be open! Cold for me is putting on a t-shirt & a sweater, when it's freezing I put on sneakers and socks.

I appreciate the info SL Jones, you make it sound almost cozy! The talk of warm stews and empty tables is very inviting Smile

Do you think it would be too cold for a Segway tour? I was concerned the wind chill would be too much?

Thought I'd add a couple of photos-
-Notre Dame (they're apparently slow to take down the holiday lights, to our delight)
-Skaters in front of Hotel de Ville
-Market at Place Bourg Tibourg, in Marais
I think this will take a couple of posts.

Glad you enjoyed the photos. I was hoping that they would reassure you about your choice.
We have friends that live in Hilarys (or is it Hilary?), near Perth. Their last name is Leopardi. They too love to visit Europe in its winter season. Apparently it's a good time to leave Western Australia.
