We had palnned to stay in Villefranche for one week on early October but finding reasonable self contained accommmodation seems difficult. We planned to use Villefranche as a base to travel to Cannes, Nice, Monaco. Any suggesstions on other locations nearby that we could try?

Thanks

Helene

Hi Helene,

What is your price range? Will you have a car? If you have a car, you can find less expensive rentals away from the coast. If you won't have a car, then it is more difficult.

You might check this thread. Ann was looking for an apartment on the Cote d'Azur and finally found one in Antibes.

Nice might be an option but it hasn't been much less expensive than VSM.

I'd also suggest Menton especially if you look for a place in the old town. Try googling 'menton rental old town'. You can sometimes find an apartment with a view such as this one. I also have a review of a great apartment but has two bedrooms and might be more than what you are looking for.

The downside of the old town is you can not drive to your apartment so you will have to carry your bags/groceries and as in any older town, there will be stairs and cobblestones to deal with. But otherwise, Menton is a very charming city.

It is also easy to get around by public transportation although it does take a bit longer since it is 30 minutes from Nice to Menton by train. Bus 100 takes 1 hour but the view along the coast is great.

Hi Helene, and Marta. Helene, just wanted you to know that James, who owns the apt. in Antibes, has been a pleasure to deal with. Antibes has good train service so you can travel to a lot of places along the Cote d'Azur without a car. Good luck with your search.

Aloha, Ann

Hi Helene!

The posted prices on owner's website doesn't necessarily mean you will be charged that amount. We got a deal from the owner of our apt. as we told him we couldn't afford to pay his price. The view from the apt. in Villefranche sur Mer was AWESOME! Marta gave me loads of information and gently suggested to rent a car if we wanted extra flexibility which was good advice. THE APT.

I would stay here again without hesitation just for being in VFSM with the view.

Hi

Thanks for your info.It was all very helpful. I had not realised you could bargain re costs. We looked at some more websites and included the word"self catering"which bought up more options. Have now found a place in VF for 500 euros which looks great.
thanks again for your help

I suppose it helped that we went "out of season" as you probably can't bargain for a lower price in high season.
